SAN FRANCISCO — House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi hinted at the possibility of weeks of debate on a U.S. strike in Syria to allow for more input on a resolution authorizing military action.
“We have been told we have more time,” Pelosi said Wednesday at an event at the online payment company Square in San Francisco. “They can accommodate a couple of weeks of debate. Our members want to have a say in shaping the resolution.”
She also confirmed she will not be whipping whatever version of a use-of-force resolution the House ultimately considers.
“It’s not anything you whip,” Pelosi said. “I’m not whipping. I’m not persuading on this.”
House Speaker John Boehner, who has endorsed a Syrian strike, said in a statement this weekend that he plans to hold a vote on some kind of resolution next week.
It remains unclear what resolution the House will consider, although it won’t be the draft resolution prepared by the White House. It is likely to include a shorter time line for military action than Obama’s draft and more limitations, likely barring any boots on the ground.
Pelosi (D-Calif.), who has also publicly sided with the president, told reporters that the House is likely to let the Senate act first and then move on their own, either voting on the upper chamber’s resolution or writing their own.
”I would watch to see when the Senate acts,” she said. “I don’t know when they will. They will go first and we’ll go.”
