I first heard of this on Rush Limbaugh this morning and have had all day to think about it.
1. This guy is agendized and I think we can expect more if this kind of thing. Because of the student loan crisis, the economy in general and some other things, people are gradually starting to re-think college and everything that goes with it, particularly the liberal arts field. I think that this is a good thing. Lots of people do. They’re beginning to notice that they are spending a bunch of money or going into debt for something that may be largely a scam. But the stakes are high for people like Penn. What kind of job could this guy get in the real world? As I understand it, the rant started with college tuition.
2. The insults to Republicans aren’t what offended me the most. We’re used to it. What was offensive was the way he talked about elderly people. I was brought up to respect old people whether they deserved it or not.Somewhere along the line as society coarsened this was lost. I think that it would be very unlikely for a conservative professor to talk this way about elderly democrats, or any democrats. Not impossible, just very unlikely. I believe that these professors are there not just to teach the subjects, but to show the young people how to be in the world, how to express their ideas civilly, how to interact with each others civilly, instead of like demented 3rd graders. There are probably a lot of them that never get found out because students are afraid of retaliation, too naive to know how complain, just don’t care or whatever.
