Australia’s conservative opposition swept to power Saturday, ending six years of Labor Party rule and winning over a disenchanted public by promising to end a hated tax on carbon emissions, boost a flagging economy and bring about political stability after years of Labor infighting.

“I know that Labor hearts are heavy across the nation tonight, and as your prime minister and as your parliamentary leader of the great Australian Labor Party, I accept responsibility,” Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said in a speech to supporters, after calling opposition leader Tony Abbott to concede defeat. “I gave it my all, but it was not enough for us to win.” …

Australia’s new government has promised to slash foreign aid spending as it concentrates on returning the budget to surplus. Labor spent billions of dollars on stimulus projects to avoid recession. But declining corporate tax revenues from the mining slowdown forced Labor to break a promise to return the budget to surplus in the last fiscal year. …

can it happen here....NO
The GOP don't want any true conservatives who might rock the boat. Instead they will trot out more RINOs and get pummeled

Oh that it happens that next year and in 2016, the headline will be, “conservatives sweep to U.S. election victory.”

I'm just praying conservatives show up at all in 2014.

It all depends who we put on the ballot. I’m not voting for Krispy or Bush.

.....Oh it can. With all that is going on with the recent talk about going into war against Syria, growing opposition to Obamacare, and a country that is off the tracks, do not count out a resurging tea party movement.

Well Obama just handed to the conservatives the midterms and maybe even 2016 with all this talk about going to war against Syria.

"It all depends who we put on the ballot. I’m not voting for Krispy or Bush."

Let me get your opinion on this: assuming Mitch McConnell survives his primary challenge, should I vote for him in the general election?

Agree with you. The appeasement culture of the GOP is too deep to change. They are not fighters.

Ugh, you couldn’t have asked a worse question. McConnell is a grade-A weakling and Quisling curtain man, but.... Grimey... a senator? Mikulski will be soiling her size 897 underwear with glee.

My official answer is, let’s cross that bridge when we come to it, and for now just make sure McConnell is not the candidate.

Maybe the conservatives need to hire his campaign manager because he seems to know how to win, at least it appears that way for now.

"Ugh, you couldn’t have asked a worse question."

And that's my real concern for 2014: conservatives across the U.S., faced with crappy choices, just don't show up and obama has absolute free rein for two years.

Don't forget that another big difference between Australia and the United States is that Australia actually has a functional immigration policy and not much of an open borders lobby.

They may be more socialist than we are in some ways, but they are far more protective of their borders. The same can be said about New Zeeland and Canada.

Yeah, they let in some undesireables on humanitarian grounds, but for the most part the policy is "welcome, if you can contribute, stay out if you can't".
