Canadian PM: Keystone quid pro quo, Mr. Obama?
Hot Air ^ | September 7, 2013 | ERIKA JOHNSEN

As I say, though, the Keystone pipeline will save everyone a lot of money and headaches, and the Canadians are understandably way past impatient with the Obama administration’s eternal dithering. Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper actually wrote to President Obama last week, wondering if they mightn’t work out a tit-for-tat of some kind:

Prime Minister Stephen Harper has sent a letter to U.S. President Barack Obama formally proposing “joint action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the oil and gas sector,” if that is what’s needed to gain approval of the Keystone XL pipeline through America’s heartland, CBC News has learned.

Sources told CBC News the prime minister is willing to accept targets proposed by the United States for reducing the climate-changing emissions and is prepared to work in concert with Obama to provide whatever political cover he needs to approve the project.

The letter, sent in late August, is a clear signal Canada is prepared to make concessions to get the presidential permit for TransCanada Corp.’s controversial $7-billion pipeline,

But there’s a huge snag. Obama hasn’t said what he wants, or needs, to assuage environmentalists that Keystone XL is in America’s national interest, or to convince congressional Democrats facing re-election next year that it can be approved without sabotaging their campaigns.

And the White House has yet to respond to the letter. And if they do respond, it’ll probably be the same old wishy-washy beating around the bush with which we are by now woefully accustomed. Yes, President Obama is going to need a lot of political cover if he ever approves this thing, but if he can just keep delaying it and pretending that his administration is still deliberating and completely avoid even having to deal with it at all before the 2014 midterms, why wouldn’t they?

Because securing our energy supplies and putting half of America to work just doesn't cut it with Democrat voters.

POSHITUS has to secure the Syrian pipeline first, Sunni problems have first priority in the USA.

0traitor is the only one who can give the trans-border approval, and he won’t do it. It won’t happen.

PM Harper needs to buy a clue.

Greenhouse gases gobbledygook isn’t ABOUT “saving the environment”, from oil & gas or anything else.

It’s COMMUNISM in another guise.

It’s unbridled state power and greed.

It is also fascism, as the government gets in bed with certain kinds of businesses and runs others out of business, all on its whim.

And, CORRUPTION, writ large. “Green” businesses get billions in grants, kickback a big percentage to Leftist politicians in office or running for office, pocket much of the rest, declare bankruptcy and move on to their next gig...

Agree to it then ignore it... that’s what Obama does

He knows all that. The problem is that Canada could spend billions developing its own refinery system, but Obama will then turn around and approve the pipeline, which will be money down the drain for Canada.

Personally, I wish the PM would be willing to spend that money for a refinery close to the oilsands and say, “Screw Obama”.

PM Harper has a clue. He is calling Obama's bluff. The supposed reason for blocking Keystone is environmental concerns. So, Harper says, what are they?

The government of Canada does not own or build oil refineries. Private industry does that.

I’m surprised they expected a decision from our community organizer. I think most people have figured out that he will never do anything to help the economy. This is how they keep their party on the plantation. If it’s good for the USA, he’s not interested.

If you’re a former Canadian, then you know that private industries borrow money from the federal government to do big projects. :)

The US is awash in crude oil right now. Barry has stalled this project long enough to encourage our own production. I don't think this development was expected but it has in fact happened mostly on private land.
Canada might as well proceed with a larger export effort from its own west coast.
