White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough asserted that a "common-sense test" rather than "irrefutable, beyond-a-reasonable-doubt evidence" makes the Syrian government responsible for a chemical weapons attack that Obama says demands a U.S. military response.

Let me put this statement through the Universal Transmogrifier:

White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough asserted that a "we have evidence the rebels released the chemicals, not Assad" but that "because the Saudis have bought our government lock, stock, and barrel, and want us to make way for a natural gas pipeline to Europe", we need a U.S. military response that will likely precipitate World War III, and we will talk vaguely about "common-sense tests" that make no common sense whatsoever.

Also anyone is yet to tell us ANY one thing that Assad would stand to gain from such an attack beyond “he’s a jerk”.

I can see what the rebels gain if they get the military might of the US their side to counter the Russians propping up Assad. I can see no military, strategic or diplomatic advantage to Assad in gassing 1500 civilians.
