MOSCOW (AP) — In a surprise move, Russia promised Monday to push its ally Syria to place its chemical weapons under international control and then dismantle them quickly to avert U.S. strikes.

The announcement by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov came a few hours after U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said that Syrian President Bashar Assad could resolve the crisis surrounding the alleged use of chemical weapons by his forces by surrendering control of "every single bit" of his arsenal to the international community by the end of the week.

It does allow Barry out of the box he put himself in...

Only for a while, since Assad will still manage to repel the rebels and Obama will again have to come up with a reason to offer more support to his terrorist friends.

The Syrian opposition can’t use their CWs anymore and blame it on Assad.

Kerry “reccommends” it then Russia agrees then Syria agrees. Obama was not only given an out, he just avoided war. He will come out the hero. We can’t win with this guy. I don’t think we’re supposed to. Will this be the beginning of a 3 1/2 year peace?

This might get obama’s * out of the wringer, but there remains his Arab Spring commitment. He, along with Turkey and Saudi Arabia, wants to advance the Mo Bro in the region. Getting off Assad’s case right now doesn’t fit in the plan.

How many people here smell a "put your nuclear weapons under international control" move here?

This is global governance at work, with the Syrians acting as foils to establish the precedent to get us to disarm unilaterally.

Question now is, what did the Unites States give up in order for Russia to step in and get Syrias WMD?

Obama had to beg Putin, “do this for me and I owe you big time.”

And Putin probably said, “the Saudi gas pipeline is dead, right?”

I must be missing something. All the talk on here is how Putin outsmarted obama. The article says Kerry came up with the idea first. obama will get credit for this.

I don’t know... Realistically, I don’t think we gave up anything - nor had anything to do with it; I’m getting the impression Mr. Putin saw a chance to stick it to Barry Soetero, stepped in, and STUCK it, but good.

Strengthens HIS hands in the Middle East, helps out his Syrian allies against the Mudslime lunatics, and shows Barry up as the ineffectual buffoon that he is all in one handy dandy economical and painless package.

Putin understands diplomacy - both the handshake kind AND the Gloved Fist kind.

This fool that half our country currently hired as public servant of the US ... not so much.

Not exactly cheering Putin. The idea has merit. The Russians probably made the weapons so let them de-activate them. We (US) have spent over a decade trying to incinerate our stockpiles of the same stuff. It ain’t easy and the Ruskies deserve their share of cleaning up the mess that they helped make. They know this and that’s why the idea is probably just another scam.

Give a few shells to some blue helmets in a warehouse in Damascus.

That’ll keep 0bambi at bay.
