I’m in favor of old-fashioned orphanages, and don’t know why the left so opposes them. An orphanage would be a draw in the community for all kinds of well-supervised volunteerism...is there even a private orphanage in business anywhere in the US? I don’t mean some foster home, I mean an institution connected with an established charity or church. Anybody know of one?

The left opposes orphanages because it’s not so seasy to avoid scrutiny when the kids are concentrated in one place. When you’ve got them dispersed around the community they’re less noticeable and that makes it easier to hide the abuses that go on at the hand of government.

I agree with you. There are older people still alive today who were raised in orphanages and actually remember them fondly. Orphanages do not have to be evil, Dickensian type places. They can be done right.
