Obama: Strike 'Absolutely' on Hold if Syria Abandons Chemical Weapons
ABC ^ | Sept. 9, 2013 | ABBY D. PHILLIP

If Syrian President Bashar al-Assad gives up his chemical weapons, a military strike would "absolutely" be on pause, President Obama said today.

"I consider this a modestly positive development," Obama told ABC News' Diane Sawyer in an interview at the White House when asked whether Syria's apparent willingness to relinquish control of its chemical weapons would prevent a U.S. strike.

"Let's see if we can come up with language that avoids a strike but accomplishes our key goals to make sure that these chemical weapons are not used," the president said.

Obama's comments come after the Russian foreign minister suggested today that Syria could avoid a U.S. attack by turning over its chemical weapons stockpiles over to international control and destroying them, a proposal the Syrian government "welcomed."

Obama said that Secretary of State John Kerry would pursue the proposal with Russia, an ally of Syria.

But at the same time, Obama said that a potential diplomatic resolution doesn't mean that Congress should withdraw the threat of military action.

"I don't think we would have gotten to this point unless we had maintained a credible possibility for a military strike and I don't think now is the time for us to let up on that," Obama said.

Told you he'd claim credit as if it were the plan all along.

So the red line is “one WMD strike then quit”? I’m sure Iran will be happy to know that...

Good. Now can we talk about Obamacare and Benghazi again?

He’s weaseling. Well, if that means the USA stays out of Syria then I’m fine with it.

Obamacare seems the most immediate issue. The House wants to send forward a stopgap spending bill to continue funding the government that doesn’t include obamacare but doesn’t shut down the government. That’s not really a bad strategy, so you can count on the Senate shooting it down.

Obama would love to get out of this pickle with a diplomatic “victory”. The MSM will heap adulation on him after this fiasco.

On the other hand, the MSM was silent during the Iraq war when Libya and Syria renounced their WMD programs after a tour of the Middle East by Sec. of State Condi Rice. Of course, that would require giving Bush credit.

He’s taking credit, and Chris Matthews will have another thrill run down his leg.

Sat at the hospital today with a friend whose dad was going into surgery. The friend is a democrat. He read this on Twitter and his first reaction was how smart Obama was that he forced this to happen.

"... "I don't think we would have gotten to this point unless we had maintained a credible possibility for a military strike"

Oh indeed, especially a military strike described as "an unbelievably small, limited kind of effort."

The Obama-adoring media will throw all the idiocy of last week down the memory hole. Why, all that wasn't absurd and ridiculous at all, but some entirely new species of brilliance!

Of course the Syrians will give up their chemical weapons. And Obama will go to visit Assad and get a personal handshake confirmation, a full Assad body hug and then a camel to bugger, and Assad will show him ALL of his chemical weapons and then hand them over.( nod, nod, wink, wink.)/S

Reminds me of the puppet movie “ Team America: World Police” and how dear leader ( Kim Il Jung)handled the Hans Blick puppet( or Obama in this case)!

It’s not a mistake by Obama. It’s how he inserts US troops into Syria. There are already Russians in Syria and Iran.
Question is, what does he do then? And how will it impact Israel?
I think we all know how the Muslim Obama, Russia, Iran, the Saudis, Muslim Brotherhood, Hamas, Hezbollah etc want this to end?
Time for the end game?
Strategically, if Israel is provoked to nuke the Middle East, Russia will be the remaining major oil and gas provider. The US and Europe will melt down, and the Commies will step in as saviors.
No need for an Obama third term…he will be the new “Lord Protector”.
All the “homeland security” FEMA camps, martial law, US troops in action on continental US, will come into play. Drone time folks…

I think, collectively, that all of us who suffered through our college and university educations during the late 60’s and 70’s remember those glib black guys who wowed anyone, mostly white hippie chicks, with their never ending rhetoric often with an “island lilt” who basically spouted this same BS. Obama is the result we got for that. To say I’m disgusted is an understatement. My generation did not do well and I’m sorry.

I bet the White House is fuming behind the scenes and trying to figure out just how to go forward with a strike.

"I don't think we would have gotten to this point unless we had maintained a credible possibility for a military strike and I don't think now is the time for us to let up on that," Obama said.

It just happened. He's now claiming credit.

Right. And Hitler was a genius for planning the economic rise of Germany in the 1980’s.

Yes, he’s definitely going to take credit even though he hasn’t had a clue. Saw Chris Wallace interview him on Fox, it was difficult to watch with Obama’s I’m the savior attitude.

I think Abrit is onto something. This is Obama’s opening to put US boots on the ground in Syria with an “international force”.

It will be the excuse, perhaps, to put an international force on the ground in Jerusalem someday since, they’ll say, “it’s a world city”.

I agree with your logic, but you know that you know that our media will let him get away with it.
