NEWARK— The owner of four dollar stores in Essex and Union counties pleaded guilty today to defrauding the food stamp program out of $5 million by letting customers use the federal subsidy to pay for electronic devices and other non-food items, prosecutors say.

If he’s guilty, the authorities who handed our deits card that make this fraud easy are even more guilty. He shouldn’t have done what he did but if the government can’t be bothered to limit use either electronically or by going back to those old, embarrassing actual food stamps who’s really to blame here?

Dollar Stores are the new Wal Mart. Big box stores are suffering, while the guys who sell the cheapest stuff are gaining, as the “cheap stuff” is all almost half can even afford.
What a country.

My girlfriend was in the local Safeway store where they have a small Starbucks Kiosk. The people in front were told they could not buy hot coffee with the EBT cards but they were able to buy iced coffees instead!
