Column: Immigration reform and welfare benefits

The U.S. House and Senate are considering an immigration reform bill. Critics of the legislation say that it will not do enough to secure our borders and that it grants amnesty to illegal immigrants. The bigger issue, which has been an important part of the debate, is how increased legal immigration will affect the cost of entitlement programs and the government budget.

The Border, Security, Economic Opportunity and Immigration Modernization Act of 2013 includes some steps to make immigrants less of a burden on government budgets, but it could include more. As noted by the Heritage Foundation, America’s immigration system has serious flaws that this legislation fails to address. Nevertheless, some of its provisions should be part of any legislation to reform immigration because the requirements make it easier for those willing to work to enter the U.S. and to make a productive contribution to our economy.

The immigration reform bill provides a way for illegal immigrants to obtain legal status and also opens a path for citizenship. It takes a step in the right direction by excluding some newly legal immigrants from receiving federal welfare benefits. The bill creates new categories of immigrants, designating some as registered provisional immigrants and others as blue-card holders. If they are classified as members of one of these new groups they will not be permitted to receive welfare benefits. The proposed legislation also creates new rules for guest workers.

Opponents argue that these changes do not do enough to limit immigrant eligibility for government benefits. Although the bill forbids registered provisional immigrants from receiving welfare benefits for 10 years, the present value of the benefits they will eventually receive as legal residents is expected to exceed what they pay in taxes.

Immigration is mutually beneficial as long as immigrants work and pay their fair share of taxes...You know reading misleading articles like this. It is enough to drive a man to drinking or using drugs. takes a step in the right direction by excluding some newly legal immigrants from receiving federal welfare benefits..Please if this a problem , why not at all. Illegals know the value of having children and more children and more children. The illegals children get all the benfits like welfare, food stamps, free health care, free school breakfasts, lunches. The illegals are experts having an education how to get every dollar they can collect from the gov and when this is not enough, return to have some kids...Although the bill forbids.lmao forbids ) registered provisional immigrants from receiving welfare benefits for 10 years After all the births are free as is all their medical bills.

How long will it take before the government is sued for discriminating against our "new friends", against which the Obama administration will get a case of alligator arms in the fight?

Also how long before Pelosi and Reid are crying about the unfairness of the law and presenting legislation to change it?

Bring a stop watch instead of a calendar if you want to measure the time.

“immigration reform” = more democrats and the end of America as we know it.

We don’t need “immigration reform” we need IMMIGRATION ENFORCEMENT.

ILLEGAL ALIENS NEED TO BE ARRESTED AND DEPORTED.

If we can make this connection why do Republican politicians supporting “reform” dismiss the welfare/amnesty connection????

It's all about sounding compassionate.

Having just finished a conference, I found out that Democrats beat us in most arguments because they appeal not to the logic but to the emotions.

Due to the almost devoid of logic taught in public schools today, few people spend any time looking at problems logically, they only deal in emotions.

Therefore, when we conservatives point out obvious (at least to us) flaws in the so called "immigration reform," we appear heartless to people who deal only in emotion, whereas liberals drag out the poor five children who will be left to fend for themselves, if their child-molestor, murderer illegal alien father is deported!

While a bill can be written and enforced that excludes these “provisional” immigrants from receiving Federal benefits, no bill can exclude them from receiving STATE benefits and courts will not allow states to exclude them. So what is any legalization bill going to cost the taxpayers of each state?

They need to be sent packing. Their kids will be competing with my kids in a uncertain economy.

Ain't that the truth.

Remember the 'medical leave ' fight some years ago?
All the libs wanted was a law requiring companies to grant unpaid medical leave for up to 3 months with the job guarantee upon the employees return.

How long did it take to morph into paid leave? A year or two?

And Social Security benefits. Wow!
Right now the gov. is getting free money. Illegals contribute $$ to the SS fund w/o being eligible for benefits.
That could all change and we will be stuck with that bill also.

I’m afraid they will cram this down our throats this time around.

The problem is that the kids born here in any area that is not an ethnic ghetto are as American as mine or yours. That gives me mixed feelings about it (yeah, I know, feeelings are for liberals). Build the WALL, stop the influx; then decide who gets to stay and who has to go.

And change the birthright citizenship to the children of those LEGALLY present in the U.S. and wanting to become U.S. citizens.
