At their peak, just a few years ago, BlackBerry smartphones were symbols of corporate and political power. When President Obama took office he made keeping his BlackBerry a personal priority, and when BlackBerry service had a hiccup so did business on Wall Street.
But after being upstaged time and again by industry rivals, the devices may soon remain only in memories.
On Friday, BlackBerry announced that it would lay off 4,500 employees, or nearly 40 percent of its already reduced work force. The cut is so deep some analysts and investors said that the companys days as a smartphone maker were effectively over.

More jobs lost thanks to the Clown Occupier.
Like Palm before it, Blackberry pioneered a new product, and staked everything on it. Apple and Google have other sources of revenue and could afford to put resources into products that compete with Blackberry. It’s pretty much what happened to Palm.
I used Palm products for years, but two years ago, I switched to an IPhone because Palm wasn’t going to survive. I think a lot of smart phone users see the same thing happening to Blackberry, and are getting IPhones or Droids.
BlackBerry is a Canadian company. They make a great product. I have tried iOS and Android, but I always come back to BlackBerry. Their biggest problems are product support and marketing. If they could deliver a product on time, they wouldn’t be in the mess they are in now.
Fixed your typo...
Guess you haven’t seen BB10. Far and away faster, more stable, and easier to use than either iOS or Android.
I agree with you. I carry a Blackberry because of security requirements. Its a very stable and reliable device. We are in the technology business and I can’t tell you how much time we spend “fixing” Android products.
Android and iPhone have the coolness factor, but BB has the reliability and the security.
I hope they survive. I am set to get the Q10 in a few days. Decided I wanted the keyboard.
I am using the Z10 right now. ALL of my iPhone friends are astonished at how much more quickly I can do things than they can, but they all complain about the same thing, not enough “apps”. They fail to realize that these apps all access varying levels of information, many of which are an invasion of privacy, or security.
BAMMY’S GOING TO BE CRUSHED W/O HIS BLACKBERRY.
Everything Barry touches turns to sh&%
So, how much “bloatware” is loaded on your phone by your carrier? I upgraded from an S3 and was happy to do so, because it was laggy and crashed two to three times a week. Also, I was sick and tired of having to sort through ads on even paid apps. So I am done with it.
Blackberry’s demise has zero to do with the Clown-In-Chief. It’s all about the market working freely.
BlackBarry is trying to do the same to the US.
LOL!
All carriers put some apps on.....that is almost unavoidable. I have a 64 GB card so the point is moot.
ROFL!
Take a look at the Nokia line. I went from iPhone to Nokia Lumia 920. It’s night and day!
The just released 1020 has a 41 MPixel camera with image stabilization.
It’s a phone.
Yup, it’s a phone. It also takes pictures and videos that let you capture what’s going on around you. The quality rivals a high end SLR.
