Case in point, I was driving in the rural area today, very little to no trash on the side of the road and “adopted by” highway signs all over.
The urban area on the other hand, will break your heart. I routinely see black folks just throw trash on the ground like its nothing.

Open carry? Meh, not so much. Although not technically illegal, carrying openly is likely to subject to you to a "going armed to the terror of the public" stipulation of the public law if somebody complains or you are spotted by a cop in a populated area.
You are better off getting a CHL and carrying concealed.
Better still, also stay away from anyplace or street carrying the name of MLK.
Durham County is the only one of the 100 counties in North Carolina where handgun registration is mandatory (or even allowed) due to a Jim Crow-era grandfathering under the state’s firearms preemption law from the 1920s or 1930s. The registration law was originally designed to disarm the blacks that called Durham home, now it keeps the law-abiding citizens disarmed from the black criminals.
As for open carry, AFAIK it is technically legal in Durham but I guarantee you that anybody openly carrying, on the ATT or otherwise, would be harassed and detained by the Durham PD. I say this as somebody who lived there for 5 years. It’s a liberal toilet.
