Navigators trained to answer questions and sign people up for health insurance under the new Affordable Care Act will be allowed to do that work inside the local public health clinics, after Democrats on the Broward County Commission voted Tuesday to defy the state's ban on that activity.
The so-called "county" health clinics are actually run by the state Department of Health, which had said the Obamacare navigators could not do their work on clinic grounds.
Enrollment starts next Tuesday, and the politically charged rhetoric has heightened as the day approaches.
Broward commissioners said the county owns the health clinic buildings and leases them to the state.
"The governor can go do and say what he wants,'' said Broward Mayor Kristin Jacobs, "but he can't do it in Broward County.''
The vote Tuesday follows that of Pinellas County, which like Broward owns the clinic buildings and brokered a compromise with the state to allow navigators inside the buildings but outside the clinics.
Gov. Rick Scott's office referred questions to the health department, which issued this statement:
"In an unprecedented move, the Broward County Commission today rejected the Department of Health's guidance to protect patient privacy and ensure patient confidentiality in County Health Departments."
Jacobs, who is running for state Legislature, said concerns the governor has voiced about the security of personal information in the hands of the navigators are "unfounded'' and "meant to scare people away from enrolling.''

Cut off funding...
For those that dont know...Broward county is home to some of the slimest people on earth. THINK HANGING CHADS...........
Yes, Broward County has given us such luminaries as Alcee “Buckwheat” Hastings and Debbie Washerwoman Schultz. It is controlled of the RATs, by the RATs, and for the RATs. The school board, county commission, sheriff, property appraiser, clerk of the courts, ad nauseum, all RAT all the time.
And people think we’re not headed toward the Second American Civil War....
Have a place there but spend most of my time in SA
After more than 50 years, I’ll be leaving BC this year. When a county’s largest employers are the school board, public hospital system and county commission (plus more than 20 municipal governments within the county) well, that’s a recipe for trouble, sooner or later.
Yep....although to be honest Broward county has one tough Tea Party. The only thing thats saving Broward county is the Canadians buying up condos...at rock bottom prices.
Leaving BC is probably the smartest thing you did in your life. Because you will still have your life. History has shown that those who wait until the balloon goes up to leave seldom get the chance to go.
If I’m not mistaken the Tea Party rally in front of the federal courthouse in Ft Lauderdale on 4/15/09 was the first one in the country. I was there.
I think you are correct. I was out of the country and recall folks asking about the Tea party. Great bunch of folks in the Broward Tea party.
Broken laws have consequences. Cut off funding baloney. Send in the state law enforcement officers and arrest the Democrat-enabled workers.
The wheels are coming off the wagon.
If a Democrat county in Florida can go rogue and decline to accept the regulations of the governing authority of the state, why cannot any state in the United States go rogue and decline to comply with the regulations of the Democrat federal health care act?
Yet it is Democrat Harry Reid who calls the conservatives "anarchists."
am I glad I do not live with such assholes.....
Are you moving North within Florida?
Hopefully, thanks to Ted Cruz and Mike Lee, their pay checks will bounce. Hopefully, this will inconvenience them and their families in return for their dedication to pubic service! Hopefully, they will aspire to flip burgers for the foreseeable future, should they be found qualified for such estimable labor.
