A poison control center in Phoenix, Ariz. is reporting that it has received calls regarding what is believed to the first two cases of krokodil use in the U.S.

Dr. Frank LoVecchio, the co-medical director at Banner's Poison Control Center, told CBS affiliate KPHO in Phoenix that his center dealt with two users of the dangerous drug known for its use in Russia in the past week.

"As far as I know, these are the first cases in the United States that are reported. So we're extremely frightened," he said.

The drug got its nickname from the Russian world for crocodile, because users tend to develop scale-like, green skin. Medscape reports that skin can fall off following use, resulting in exposed bones. The drug also causes blood vessels to rupture and death of the surrounding tissue. Users can also develop abscesses and gangrene.

"It eats you from the inside out," LoVecchio explained.

That's what I was thinking, too. Surely use of this drug would quickly decline, as the million or so succumb to rotting flesh and all that.

This drug must have one heck of a “high” to have people using this it with these kinds of side-effects ...

Ah, finally found the “cause.” Nobody writes a complete, informative article anymore. It’s just the gory bits and then onto the next “human interest” story.

“The flesh rotting that is specific to Krokodil occurs directly at the injection site which could be anywhere from the feet to the forehead to the more traditional arms.

According to Time magazine, ‘Gangrene and amputations are a common result, while porous bone tissue, especially in the lower jaw, often starts to dissipate, eaten up by the drug’s acidity.’

It takes cheap over the counter codeine and intensifies the effects to morphine levels by mixing it with a variety of petroleum distillates. It's an injected opiate that is cooked up along the lines of a meth lab. Nasty stuff, nasty side effects.

An krokodil user is one who takes krokodil, hoping it will eat him last.

Before It’s News did an article about krokodil about a year ago, with some really gruesome videos of Russian doctors sawing off addicts’ arms and legs. The limbs were completely rotted away, and only the naked bones remained. Truly ghastly. And the reason why this evil poison is so popular with Russian addicts is because codeine could be bought in that country over the counter without a prescription. I think the Russians tried to change that, but it’s too little too late.

Some side effects include the rotting of your flesh from the inside out, the loss of limbs, bleeding of the eyes and sudden death.

What really was most disturbing to me when I first read about Krokodil, and saw images of it’s users were some were laughing and smiling, even though their bones were exposed, and their flesh had rotted off.

Let them kill themselves with this stuff. They will not be worth anything to society or anyone in it in any way except as supremely bad examples.

Well, taking that drug certainly sounds enticing—I’ve always wondered what it would be to have green scaly skin that falls off, leaving your bones exposed.............

What in the world is wrong with people?

Must be a fantastic high! Where can I get some? /S

This sounds more gruesome (and quicker) then end stage meth abuse, which ain’t pretty.
