I got audited, I also provoked it. A few years back I had to start doing Form 8889 for having an HSA account. It was only used for medical expenses, thus there is no tax. The 3rd year I sent it back with nothing more than the name/SSN at the top, and $0. at the bottom, they audited me for that. So I finally had to bother with learning to fill it in correctly......
I figured it was like math, I derived the answer in my head correctly and left the proof for the reader at the IRS. They got nothing for their work, maybe I’ll omit it next time.
I liked your idea about the messy handwriting. The more I get reamed the more agitated I get and the more it shows in my chicken-scratches! ;’)
