The Democrats and the mainstream media (but I repeat myself) have been carrying on as if a shutdown of the federal government would be a catastrophe for the country and the economy, perhaps even pitching us back into recession while little old ladies starve in their beds and children die of neglect.
That won’t happen. While it is embarrassing that the politics of the world’s most powerful country are in such disarray that a defunding of the government could happen, we’ve been similarly embarrassed before with few if any long-term consequences.
Non-essential government workers will be furloughed and not paid for the duration of the shutdown. Whether they will be paid for those days eventually is up to Congress. But air-traffic controllers, border and prison guards, and weather forecasters will all be on the job. As will the military.

I remember the government shutdown of 1995. The liberal media had reporters stationed at the entrance to every national park, monument, and museum just to find the ONE family that traveled across the country on their first vacation in 10 years just to find the destination they had always dreamed of visiting closed. Of course the liberal reporter would sympathatically interview them while zooming in on a couple kids staring sadly at a “Closed Due to Government Shutdown” sign. Then for the icing on the cake they would end the story by asking the family who they blamed for ruining their vacation, which would of course always be Newt Gingrish and/or the Republicans in congress.

The shutting down of the govt hurts. Is it armegeddon? Of course not, but you also can’t diminish the effects. I am on record here saying politically it is a bad play. Why? Perception if nothing else. The only this works is public opinion changes. Polls have a 13 to 22 gap depending on poll in favor of president. Lets face a reality if the public is not on your side you lose. How do we flip the narrative and the polls. That is the question.
A story from my youth. Dad gave me the car keys for the first time and said be right just don’t be dead right.
Moral? You might be principled and right to shut it down but without the public the damage could be far worse.

Please explain to me how the perception will be different that it is now? Or rather, explain how the image that is put forward to shape perception will be different than it is now? I learned long ago that if I am going to be constantly accused of behaving a certain way, and I am continually on the dirty end of the stick, because of it, no matter what the reality of the situation, I am better off to partake in the behavior I am accused of and reap the benefits of it.
In the end, my point was made, and the truth came out and I was vindicated.
How are you going to be vindicated if you lose even more power. There is talk that 25 republican house members may not vote for latest plan. If it fails republicans become irrelevant
It’s funny: I missed going on a planned hike on Haleakela National Park (volcano) in Hawaii in 1995 because of that shutdown, and I actually have 2 planned vacations to National Parks in the next two months: Kalaupapa National Historical Park in Molokai in Oct and Yosemite National Park in California in Nov (first trip there for me even though I’ve lived 3 hours from it since 1983!). It’s funny because I almost *never* visit national parks but unfortunately I end up planning them at “federal government shutdown” time. I have to remember to *not* attempt to visit these places in the fall. . .but Yosemite, I hear, is so great in the fall!
Be careful, I live less than an hour from Yosemite, it may well be snowing heavy there in Nov.
Thanks—I’ll be staying in the valley but hoping to hike up a bit higher—does the valley at least tend to stay clear of snow in mid-Nov, you think?
The valley is only at 4,000 feet in elevation, you might have a light snowfall there in November, in the high country for sure. Fall is in full swing up there right now, and it has even snowed up there already.
