The state Department of Natural Resources on Wednesday refused a directive from the National Park Service to close a host of popular state properties because of the federal government shutdown.
The park service ordered state officials to close the northern unit of the Kettle Moraine, Devil's Lake, and Interstate state parks and the state-owned portion of the Horicon Marsh, but state authorities rebuffed the request because the lion's share of the funding came from state, not federal coffers.
State officials opted to keep public lands open as Gov. Scott Walker blamed both Republicans and Democrats for the partial government shutdown and said congressional leaders should run the nation more like Wisconsin. Democrats balked at those comments, saying the Republican governor has had a tumultuous tenure that has divided people.
Even though federal lands such as the Apostle Islands National Lakeshorehave been shuttered, the DNR issued a statement saying all state parks, trails and other recreational properties were open and not affected by the federal government's budget problems.
The agency also reopened a boat launch Wednesdayat Wyalusing State Park on the Mississippi River. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service closed the launch on Tuesday because it was on federal land.
But in a sign of defiance, the DNR removed the barricades at the landing, saying it had the legal authority to operate the launch under a 1961 agreement with the federal government.

So very disappointed to hear this about Walker, what the heck happens to these folks that have such promise!! Tea Party fought so hard with him, so very sad to hear from Wisconsin folks he is not all we all hoped he would be!!!”......
Just because you read someone’s opinion on the internet does NOT mean it is TRUE. Gov. Walker has done a tremendous job for Wisconsin and should he choose, would do likewise as the new president.
On Free Republic, any sin is or perceived sin is reason for rejection.
Only conservative Christ like purity and perfection can be tolerated
If so, I’m disappointed in the gov, as I have for Scott (on some occasions. Enough to cause me to not vote for again...??) here in FL.
If he’s shifting to the ‘center’ for a run, then he’s unprincipled and unfit for the office.
Same for anyone else that would hold ideals for YEARS, but, upon noting a run for office, ‘rethink’ their position has no business being trusted by We the People.
Let me see if I get this right.
The only Federal people working are the people closing the parks.
I knew that, but when I posted at 1 am, it just didn’t come out right ... (i’m still tired)
Go Rick Scott Walker!
I bet the IRS investigation started the moment this hit the wires.
The Feds have absolutely NO authority to tell the states what they can do with their own parks & the tax money that supports those parks.
Obama is over reaching AGAIN.
The REVOLUTION is coming closer.
Storm the Barrycades!!! Free the Parks!!! Liberate the Monuments!!!
YAY!!! Jim Thompson!
It is absolutely true that Gov. Walker is in favor of “Comprehensive” Immigration. That’s why I sent back his last several requests for more money with a drop dead I’m done supporting you note.
Here is a link for a more recent article where he was questioned about his immigration position.
Back in May, 2010 he said this:
“If I were governor of Arizona, I too would sign the Arizona immigration bill.”
Then two years later he said he would fight against an Arizona type bill if it came across his desk. I guess his opinions are still evolving.
Yes Scott would make a great president, he’s proven he doesn’t back down or cow tow to the rats!
Then, unless he could articulate how/why his position has changed he should get no votes for higher office; being that he’s shown himself to have no principles of his own.
Oh, how I wish ‘none of the above’ were a valid choice in the elections ;)
