A Republican Response to Obamacare
Townhall.com ^ | October 3, 2013 | Cal Thomas

If Republicans were smart (I know, but stay with me) their focus during the Obamacare debate should have been less on blocking its implementation and more on a page they might have taken from the Democrat's playbook, which is to rally the country to its side by use of sentimentality and the threat of impending doom. The good news for Republicans is that there's still time.

It's a sure bet Democrats are right now writing sob stories of tearful children barred from the Lincoln Memorial because of the government "shutdown." The National Zoo in Washington inexplicably turned off its unmanned Panda Cam, which showed video of the newborn panda cub on the Internet. Boohoo.

A recent CBS News poll found that 54 percent of Americans disapprove of Obamacare. Republicans should respond with a campaign to encourage citizen outrage.

The Republican Party might create a series of TV and radio ads to run in states where Democrats are vulnerable in next year's Senate and House races. Here are a few suggestions as to what these ads might highlight:

-- Doctors who have quit their practices because they can no longer make a living under the voluminous federal requirements and rising costs of the new health care law would tell their stories. Similarly, because with Obamacare you may not be able to keep your old doctor, depending on the network you choose, show people lamenting this loss.

Yes, the Democrats could counter with ads showing people who say they had no insurance before Obamacare and they can now have their chronic diseases treated. Republicans might respond by saying the insurance "cure" may be worse than the disease and could ultimately reduce the quality and affordability of treatment for many others.

For example, instead of saving $2,500 per person as President Obama promised, according to Forbes magazine, "Obamacare will add $7,450 to average health care spending for a family of four between 2014 and 2022."

-- People can be shown opening envelopes from their private insurance companies that announce higher premiums, contradicting the president's promises regarding the low-cost benefits of the Affordable Care Act.

-- Show young people who had planned to become doctors choosing other professions, claiming Obamacare has made the practice of medicine less desirable.

-- Provide testimonials from the British, who languish under the weight of a ponderous universal health system, about long waits to see general practitioners, additional waiting time to see a specialist and still more delays for any kind of government-approved medical procedure. The tagline might be, "Take it from us, America. You don't know what's coming. We do."

-- Disseminate headlines from British newspapers that report on unnecessary deaths, substandard treatment and unavailable hospital beds in conditions that most Americans would not accept.

If the United Kingdom, whose population of slightly more than 62 million people, is experiencing severe problems and potential insolvency with its 65-year-old National Health Service (NHS), why would anyone believe a government-run health insurance system in the United States and the health care monstrosity that must inevitably follow will be any more successful with a population more than 300 million? Government, lumbering and inefficient at best, should not be the arbiter of health care.

This battle will not be won in Washington. It must be won in the states. Only when Americans awaken to where Obamacare inevitably leads will Republicans have a chance of winning the Senate in 2014 and the White House in 2016. Only then might Obamacare be repealed.

With most diseases, early detection is important. An early repeal of Obamacare is equally vital -- before it has a chance to metastasize.

Ads will help bring the issue home to a wary public.

The GOP supports RomneyCARE/ObamaCARE.

THAT IS A FACT. --- Romney began it
and the GOP attempted to lie, lie, lie about it.

This is precisely why we need a new conservative, constitutional party. Wobblies are not going to achieve what is needed.

If you can get to join every one, that would be great, but you would be wasting your time and effort if only a few thousand would join

Spot on.

What is true of the following:

1. I have a $300/mo Anthem $8000 deductible now, but I’ll be getting a notice saying it went up to $900/mo (Ohio)?
2. Do I still have to sign up via the 1800F***YO?
3. I have not tried to sign up, but do I have to or is there a choice of fine to pay?
4. I heard when you sign up you provide your bank info so they can and will automatically take your premiums and fines from your account...is that true?

Gee, those w/ out bank accounts, I guess they’re the permanent voters for 0bummer and recipients of my transfer of wealth.

*This is precisely why we need a new conservative, constitutional party. *

If the Republicans can eviscerate or kill the UnAffordable DeathCare act then I'll continue to vote Republican.

If not, I'll be voting for a third Conservative Party.

The ads need to show how many jobs are going down to 29 hours because of this debacle.

Just learn how to to say, “My name is Juan Garcia. I don't know what my address is. Lo siento. Now give to me the HealthCare which is my right as a non-American!”

A few million would join immediately and would provide enough funding to mount a national ad campaign and support a slate of candidates in every state.

How ironic. All people will need photo id cards to enroll in oblamercare so why not make them show the very same id's when they register to vote?

That would be fantastic but you don’t know that, and I have to admit that I don’t know that only a few thousand would join.

You are 100% correct. Lonegan has been using this strategy in his anti-obamacare prime time TV ads. It has knocked Booker down significantly.

The first sentence smacks of political pragmatism. It is manipulation and weakness. It might work in the short term, but it is not material from which one might build a solid house.

The Republican *response* is one thing, but the Republican *plan* must be to systematically dismantle these FDR and LBJ and Obama monstrosities, while screwing as few people as possible in the process.

The key to this is taxation and slashing the size of the federal government.

The Republicans have shown aptitude in reducing the rate of *growth* of spending; but it will be conservative Republicans that will have to carry out the actual cuts. And they must be BIG cuts. Entire agencies of government will have to cease to exist.

But when the cuts are made, hopefully the Republican’s budget deficit will be reduced, eliminated, or even in the black. When that happens, they can start to kill off the socialist nightmares.

1) Stop enrolling anyone but minimum wage workers in Social Security. And privatize their enrollment in the system. Social Security and Medicare are evil twins, so the same applies to new enrollments in Medicare. FICA taxes are effectively finished, so instantly, a lot of entry level paychecks are doubled.

2) Then start working from bottom to top of people enrolled in SS, offering them a deal. If they get out of SS for good, they pay no more FICA, and they get several years of tax deductions slightly better than the money they have already paid into the system. So, they get more take home money, and pay lower taxes. A great deal for them.

3) Offer them the opportunity to create an Individual Medical Account (IMA), like an Individual Retirement Account (IRA), to fill the gap left with the loss of Medicare. Since their paycheck is doubled and their taxes are lowered, incentivize them to put their money in their IRA and IMA.

4) Offer the people currently receiving Social Security a deal, that if they still have substantial taxable income, they can get *more* money in tax cuts if they turn down their SS checks. If they need their SS, they still get their checks.

5) Turn many federal programs into block grants to the states, with no strings attached. All the federal government does is to assure the money has been spent on what it is supposed to be spent, with no regulatory or other strings attached.
