My wife and I visited the memorial in 2008. It’s beautiful. Water is the central motif in it all. There’s a large reflecting pool in the center, as can be seen in the right hand corner of this picture. On the north/south axis are two structures titled ‘’Pacific’’(seen here to the left) and the other is “Atlantic’’ representing the two theaters of the war. Along the base of each, inscribed in stone are the major campaigns and battles of each of theater along the rim of a half-moon shaped fountain. Here the water is roiling and tumbling, suggesting the roar and chaos of battle. The most poignant use of water that I saw is on the western wall, seen at the back of this picture. Where dark and light grey granite is the major material, along this western wall white marble is used. Here gold stars, each representing in denomination adding up to the 435,000 American dead of WW2. Here the water falls over this area in a very thin, very quiet shimmering way suggesting reverence. The face of this wall is to the east with the sun light glinting off the gold stars. It’s simply breath taking and very moving. My wife’s late father served with the 4th. Marine Division in WW2. I had a number of uncles, all gone now, who served in Europe and in the Navy in the Pacific. I could kick the crap out of this piece shit punk ass president from here to next Tuesday for what he has done concerning this memorial and what it means to these veterans, their families and all Americans for whom a generation of young men and women fought so heroically and courageously for. Obama really is the embodiment of what decent, hard-working and law-abiding black people mean when they use the n word.
