GOP lawmakers pressure EPA to include coal-powered states on tour

Coal supporters are rallying behind Rep. Shelley Moore Capito's (R-W.Va.) call for the Environmental Protection Agency to include coal-producing states on its listening tour.

The agency announced Thursday that the first two stops in its 11-meeting listening tour, meant to gather input on carbon emissions limits for power plants, would be postponed due to the government shutdown.

Earlier this week, the agency said it would not stop in heavy coal-producing states.

House Republicans pushed back, saying the tour conveniently avoids the states where the proposed carbon emissions rule, a key part of President Obama's climate change agenda, would spike electricity costs the most.

Moore Capito introduced a resolution on Tuesday calling for the EPA to include the 15 biggest coal-producing states in its tour. Her resolution quickly garnered 17 co-sponsors.

"Given the profound implications these regulations could have for American families, businesses and our nation’s energy future, coal communities must have a seat at the table as EPA considers the path forward for the existing power fleet," the American Coalition for Clean Coal Electricity (ACCCE) said in a Friday statement applauding the resolution.

"Thankfully, Rep. Shelley Moore Capito continues to advocate for those who stand to lose the most but whose voices are being excluded from this important national conversation.”

Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) reached out to EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy on Thursday, requesting the EPA stop in his home state of Kentucky.

“I request the EPA host an additional listening session in Pikeville, Kentucky, which is located in the heart of coal country," the Senate minority leader wrote in a letter to the EPA. "Pikeville is certainly much more representative of those who work in the coal industry than San Francisco."

McConnell is among 20 other lawmakers who have decided to make the administration's "war on coal" a top issue for the 2014 campaign cycle.

The EPA listening tour will stop in San Francisco, Boston, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Denver, Dallas, Seattle, Chicago, New York City, Washington, D.C., and Lenexa, Kan.

If Repubs were actually conservative as they claim to be they would simply defund the EPA for good. I'm not sure why the congress who literally holds the paycheck of all these alphabet soup bureaucracies feels the need to negotiate anything. Just go to them and say here's what you are doing and what you are not doing otherwise your paycheck will never come and just for even asking we're starting by cutting the entire budget of your department by 50%. Have a nice day.

For every man, woman, child and illegal alien currently residing in the continental United States there are currently 1.5 million pounds of proved accessible coal reserves. Coal currently is used to generate 44% of the electricity used in the United States. At current rates of consumption it would take several hundred years to exhaust these reserves.

This is extremely inconvenient for those who would like to take power by restricting access to inexpensive sources of energy.

Clearly you are not liberal. (Sarcasm)

These liberals think that fossil fuels are evil. Don’t confuse them with facts about how much in coal reserves we have. Liberals are into solar and wind, at least in places where windmills don’t ruin the view from a liberal’s property.

Liberals are against nuclear, even though nuclear doesn’t produce any dreaded greenhouse gases. Never understood why liberals are that way on nuclear.

Yep, libs want the taxpayers to subsidize wind and solar power to the tune of billions a year so rate payers bills will “only” double or triple.

I believe wind and solar provide somewhere between 1% and 2% currently so there’s trillions more to be spent. It doesn’t take a genius to realize it ain’t gonna work.

As I am sure that you know... the proposed regulations are intended to put current coal fired power plants out of business and to prevent any more from being built. There currently are no proved technologies that can burn coal to generate electricity and comply with the new requirements. It is the same as the incandescent light bulb ban. They are not technically banned but it is not possible to produce an incandescent bulb which can comply with the new standards.

Dunno that Atlanta is such a “tree-hugging” city. After all, it keeping Florida from getting the water it needs from the Chattahoochee, and Lake Lanier.

The sad thing is that China and India have been bringing up to four new coal fired power plants on-line per week. These are not designed to comply with the same type of air pollution control regulations as the plants we have here. Unfortunately, much of the pollution from these plants actually ends up on our side of the globe just weeks after it is produced.

Some global warming alarmists blame the nearly 20 year pause in surface temperature increase on particulate (soot) from these new plants. The actual pollution problem with these plants has nothing to do with CO2 and very little to do with the soot. The more worrisome problems are from sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides which are largely eliminated from our heavily regulated power plants.

I did read that about 90% of the employees are furloughed but Gina McCarthy is still there, she should have been the first to go.
