Why the Shutdown is a Republican Victory (Leftist crying)
Daily Beast (I know, I know) ^ | 14 Oct 2013 | Peter Beinart

Posted on 10/15/2013 2:10:08 PM PDT by 11th_VA

The news from Washington is all about President Obama’s impending triumph in the government shutdown/debt ceiling standoff. “Boehner Blinks,” declared a recent headline in The Washington Post. “Republicans,” explained ABC’s Jonathan Karl, “are working out the terms of their surrender.”

---snip---

The promise of the Obama presidency was not merely that he’d bring Democrats back to power. It was that he’d usher in the first era of truly progressive public policy in decades. But the survival of Obamacare notwithstanding, Obama’s impending “victory” in the current standoff moves us further away from, not closer to, that goal.

It’s not just that Obama looks likely to accept the sequester cuts as the basis for future budget negotiations. It’s that while he’s been trying to reopen the government and prevent a debt default, his chances of passing any significant progressive legislation have receded. Despite overwhelming public support, gun control is dead. Comprehensive immigration reform, once considered the politically easy part of Obama’s second term agenda, looks unlikely. And the other items Obama trumpeted in this year’s state of the union address—climate change legislation, infrastructure investment, universal preschool, voting rights protections, a boost to the minimum wage—have been largely forgotten.

This is the standard liberal M.O.

They cry like hell about everything such as BO “always caving to the pubbies” when there is clearly no such thing. To them, “always caving” equals allowing the bush tax cuts extend for two more years.

From my foxhole. BO have never compromised once, ever.

Imagine how they’re going to feel when the supreme court rules against affirmative action in the Michigan case. Even the ACLU is saying it doesn’t look good for them.

In a sane world Obama and Harebrain Harry would have poisoned the well and no legislation would ever pas the House. However, the Republican Party is so strewn with eunuchs, kapos and Vichy republicans that Barack and Harry’s lies and slander will be ignored in the interest of “bipartisanship”.

Because a few Republicans actually understand that if you’re going to do well in negotiation you START OUT asking for 100% of what you want. If you start out asking for half of what you want, you only end up getting half of that. Which means Obama would win 75 to 25.

truly progressive public policy

What does this mean if they insist on denying that they are socialists?

The progressive types have not yet realized that not only are they not winning any more battles, but they are well along to losing the war.

In past, whenever they forced through gigantic legislation, be it as part of FDR’s New Deal, or LBJ’s Great Society, once they had forced it through, they could easily block the Republicans tearing it down, because they would need a 2/3rds majority in both houses, and the presidency to do it.

But John Roberts has changed the equation. He ruled that Obamacare is a tax. Taxes are special in the constitution because they can be made, changed or repealed with just a simple majority. Nothing about them requires a 2/3rds vote.

So as soon as the Republicans have a simple majority in both houses, and the presidency, Obamacare is over. They don’t have to repeal it, just zero it out. Without funding, even if the Democrats got back into power two years later, Obamacare would still be dead. Nobody would be employed keeping it alive. It would have no equipment or information or anything.

As a program, it would, and likely will be a corpse. It would have to be started again from scratch. Which isn’t going to happen.

For their part, in the House, the Republicans have voted time and again to end Obamacare. It is almost a ritual to them. So when back in power, they will be used to voting to kill it.

Michael Barone makes essentially the same point: that the current battle obscures the enduring GOP and conservative victory in making sequestration more or less permanent. Two additional gains are that Obamacare and out of control federal spending are now defining domestic issues between the two parties and will define the 2014 and 2016 elections.

They lie to America but more importantly the left lies to themselves... and they know that they are lying... but they so want to believe that they do.

That's actually a pretty insightful article for a leftist.

He is correct that the sequester cuts were a huge loss for the Dems. In our focus on the defense cuts, we've forgotten that.
