"They get detected but the law of averages dictates that if you try enough you will eventually get through."

There is only one "chunnel" correct? Seems to me that with only one point of entry you could pretty well keep those coming over illegally to a minimum. How do they get past France's side? I doubt they are French citizens coming over correct? That means they would have to be illegals in France also.

Correct. There was a very interesting piece on the radio this morning about it funnily enough. They interviewed some Syrians who have tried “over 40” times to get into Britain that way. They were going to try again tonight.

The accusation was that the Gendarmes in Calais were failing to do their job by catching them and returning them to the camp. According to EU law they have to claim asylum in the first EU country they enter, which obviously is not Britain. So they travel across the continent illegally in the hope of getting to Britain because they believe that Britain is a better place for asylum.

According to the radio, when the french police catch them, they should return them to the first country they entered the EU. But they’re not. Gallic shrugs all around on that one.
