Over at The American Spectator Jeffrey Lord compares Obamacare to Vietnam on the basis of how civil disobedience grew...
...snip...
..... What he doesn't address is the source of the opposition. The draft thwarted the plans of young men. A large slice of those from middle to upper middle class backgrounds would not accept it.
Obamacare has a similar if less severe effect on young people trying to get started in adult life. They often have student loans to pay. They need full time jobs which are disappearing and now they are asked to pay huge sums for a product few think they need.
The self-proclaimed smartest people in the room seemed to have missed that almost all political revolutions begin when state policies thwart the ambitions of the middle class.

Interesting point...
We’ll see if they fine millions of people for not having health insurance. Will these bills go out and be paid?
We’ll see if, assuming glitches in signing people up are resolved, if many get sticker shock and decide it isn’t worth it. I think many had assumed that this mandatory insurance was going to be subsidized.
Liberals used to say Bush lied, people died. Can we say Obama lied?? He said if you like your health plan and doctor, that you could keep them. He said that the average healthcare cost would decline $2500 per family. These are turning out not to be true.
I’ve heard that the subsidies under Obamacare phase out at fairly low income levels, so many moderate income middle class people will find themselves paying high rates for limited coverage, and high deductibles.
I can see civil disobedience on a large scale arising out of this. What is millions simply vote with their feet and decline to sign up?
A couple of weeks ago, I listened to a doctor being interviewed on the radio who said that when young people see how they are getting screwed over by this administration, they will just outright refuse to participate.
People will always look out for their own self interests.
Ted Cruz said that it’s up to the American people to defeat Obamacare.
That will be a first for us.
Obamacare made me think of Vietnam in another way: didn’t the heavily Democratic Congress refuse to fund America’s obligations to South Vietnam under the January 1973 Paris peace treaty? wasn’t that “settled law?” I never heard anyone else mention this. Maybe I am wrong.
Fifty Years ago, I see no comparison. They refused to fight for their Country. Different Losers. These are just a gimme gimme gimme.
Forgot to add, those are the ones running the Country today. zeros then zeros now.
In the long run, I think that the law will be tweaked to give more and more people government subsidies.
Eventually this mess will drift into a single-payer system. And that single payer will be the Fed, who will simply print money to cover the costs.
What could possibly go wrong with that?
What happened in Massachusetts with RomneyCare when people didn’t sign up?
Good question. Was Romney Care mandatory? Were there legal penalties attached to not signing up? I don’t know, but hopefully someone else does.
Yes, the Democrat Congress, led by Ted Kennedy and others, refused to honor our obligations to the South Vietnamese. President Ford all but begged Congress not to turn it’s back, to no avail.
Even with that, the SVN bravely hung on for another year, but were finally crushed by the communist onslaught. The death of millions in the killing fields was the final result of the Democrats treason.
As far as I'm concerned, ObamaCare is just a rip-off of RomneyCare.
They put in several of these stupid tool roads down here and I heard yesterday one person owes $280,000 in tolls and fines. Really? Same report said there are millions in unpaid tolls. So much for automating the real people out of toll booth and enforcing pay as you go.
Not too defend the government but if you get a toll of $1.35 and don’t pay it they add on fees and penalties so now you owe $30 times that by as many tolls you accrue.
Yup - and I believe Joe biden voted for the de-funding. Strange no one mentioned this during the shutdown. but i always bring this up when some leftist rants about the tereaties the US supposedly dishonored.
Believe me, as a Vietnam combat veteran, I see the comparison.
It’s self-interest, plain and simple.
The stated intentions of the two different generations are different, but the self-interest is obvious.
While I loathe the draft dodgers of that era, it’s pretty clear they were interested primarily in saving their own skins.
Today’s “Obamacare Dodgers” will be interested in saving their own money.
The result is in the process the latter will be fighting communism, while the former refused to fight it, aiding and abetting it by their actions. I think that’s what you were getting at, and if so, on that we certainly can agree.
I cannot be convinced that Obama did not commit premeditated fraud.
Well....they COULD have used Mass. SOFTWARE .... but, no, probably not enough corporatists to give graft to....
Beware of angry young men, and the sixties is indeed an object lesson.
