German Chancellor Angela Merkel complained to President Barack Obama on Wednesday after learning that U.S. intelligence may have targeted her mobile phone, saying that would be a serious breach of trust if confirmed.
For its part, the White House denied that the U.S. is listening in on Merkels phone calls now. The president assured the chancellor that the United States is not monitoring and will not monitor the communications of the chancellor, White House spokesman Jay Carney said. The United States greatly values our close cooperation with Germany on a broad range of shared security challenges. However, Carney did not specifically say that that U.S. had never monitored or obtained Merkels communications.
Merkel spokesman Steffen Seibert said in a statement the chancellor made clear to Obama in a phone call that she views such practices, if the indications are confirmed
as completely unacceptable.

What if they gave an electronic surveillance state party and no one came?
Did she call on one of her bugged phones?
Way to go Obama! First the French were pissed off with us over this and now the Germans.
In 1945 I think it would have been much more understandable that we’d be spying on them.
This is why the NSA should be in charge of the healthcare website. They know IT and they know IT well. They’ve been listening in on hundreds of millions of emails, phone calls, and bank transactions for years, without anyone knowing about it. Compare this to setting up a website to collect user data and place it in some databases which the Canadian contractors could not successfully do.
I was in Germany just a few weeks ago.
Their MSM and elitist classes are even more pro-Obama and Progressive than here in the USA
F*** ‘em
The key words are 'is not monitoring' and 'will not monitor' her cell phone. But nothing has been said about whether they 'have' monitored her cell phone in the past. I believe they have.
So, we’re back to “it all depends on what the meaning of ‘is’ is.”
I wonder what the folks that voted for this jerk think of him now, that his true character is finally coming out..
What must they think while in the silence of their room.. I understand not speaking out, but really..
I'll take a back seat to no man when it comes to general loathing of Obama. However I believe that the NSA was out of control long before Obama get involved. And frankly, while I have no problem at all believing Obama would call a bureaucrat and order them to audit the Tea Party or authorize gestapo tactics at public monuments to make his political opponents look bad, I doubt he actually cares enough about what is being said by other world leaders to direct the NSA to spy on them.
I'm glad it's all come out and I'm doubly glad that it's happening now so Obama's the one who has to squirm even though I think the surveillance state started well before him.
PJ, I operated a large number of restaurants and hotels in my past, and many had hundreds of employees, with diverse responsibilities, so I had to delegate as a matter of control.. There were directives that came from my office that no one questioned, that no one doubted the resulting consequences should those rules be broken..
Unless there are public firing within the highest levels of the NSA, this was an inside job, and will be buried ASAP..
He's "Obama" lady - are ya nuts?
There were foot prints in the soil outside Merkel’s bedroom window. Probably means nothing that only left foot prints were found. Nothing....nothing at all...
