November 04, 2013, 02:23 pm HealthCare.gov down, press call canceled

By Elise Viebeck

Federal health officials canceled a regular call with reporters Monday as ObamaCare's struggling online enrollment portal briefly crashed again.

HealthCare.gov was down and preventing users from starting applications for healthcare coverage on the federal marketplace as of mid-afternoon Monday.

ADVERTISEMENT A regular 1:30 p.m. call with the media was then rescheduled at 1:45 p.m., prompting questions about the nature of the outage. The site appeared functional again around 2:20 p.m.

An official with the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) blamed the call's postponement on change in schedule. The official did not announce another time for the daily phone briefing.

The troubling sign for HealthCare.gov comes as HHS rushes to repair the site before Nov. 30, a self-imposed deadline.

The portal has been taken offline at regular intervals for maintenance over the last month, including for 12 hours between Saturday and Sunday. It has also crashed at other times as the result of internal technical issues.

The site's problems on Monday did not appear linked to any announced repairs.

The country is better off when two things are not operating: Congress and healthcare.gov.

Perhaps we should call it...”operationally emergent”.

That might be offensive to those who have had operations. I'm thinking we're definitely going to need a grant, so we can put together a diverse steering committee and conduct surveys and hold focus groups to develop an inclusive, non-offensive nomenclature. To do anything less would be paternalistic and hegemonistic.

there also exists the very strong possibility that it was this splash page that crashed the system..

Hmmm. Excellent point, I hadn’t thought of that. Particularly in this, the new era of ‘operations’ as events being so much more rare and only available under extreme conditions or to those with special exemptions.

This may be a bigger challenge than FReepers like yourself and myself can rise to. We can’t certainly can’t call the website “working” or “non-working” because that could easily offend (depending on whether you believe U-3 or U-6) up to a sixth of the population.

On the other hand, I am sensing an angle here. Calling the website “working” has the potential of being a reservoir of offense taken that suggest its use as a non-polluting, non-carbon emitting energy source. It could be the foundation of a new class of energy directives we could easily call “emoMotive”. They would based upon creating population-wide chaos and uncertainty and hooking electrodes up to suitable subjects and using the available neural energy to power windmill output-indicator panels and the like. Or emoMotive vehicles. Cranked to its maximum, this emotive energy could all in one sweep 1: create the energy required to move emoMotive, non-polluting vehicles, 2: give the drivers of same freaking heart attacks, thus causing 3: vehicle accidents getting cars off the roads, 4: lowering long term medical costs, while 5: tackling long term healthcare costs by cutting off the annoying survivability habits of baby boomers with the side benefit of 6: providing union jobs fixing up guard rails and various highway infrastructure elements sure to be damaged in mania-induced heart attacks. In essence, we could take the concept of “shovel ready” and morph it into “shovelogenic”; meaning activities likely to cause damage that only union labor can address and thus be hired for. And what’s nice about this is that the whole concept of “accidents” is wonderful for the concept of non-responsibility, which means illegals can participate and take their rightful place among natural citizens.

I think the scope of the grant just quintupled. You in?

I'm in. And I have just the group of suitable subjects. Facinatingly (or maybe not), they already call themselves emos. I think they'd be perfect for our "emoMotive" initiative.

Wow, what an incredible winning concept! You can’t tell me that face doesn’t belong to someone who’d plead total lack of responsibility for driving their car into a tree or worse, into yours.

I swear, I wish I had the resources to write this up as a grant proposal.
