Obenshain’s father was to be the Republican nominee for the Senate in 1976 but was killed in a small plane crash while campaigning. Nominee runner up and ex-Navy Sec. John Warner, stupid as he was, nonetheless was smart enough to always marry wealthy women; Liz Taylor was his second wife after Catherine Mellon. The attraction and money of Liz pushed dumb John over the top by 10,000 votes to win the Senate seat. I recall Richard Nixon’s taped words when Ehrlichman protested that some prospective Navy Secretary nominee was not smart enough - “Any ******* can do that job; hell, we had John Warner doing it”.
