I think there are a lot of conservatives who have assumed that Cuccinelli has what it takes to be a big time pol. It's quite possible that he has spent his entire career riding the political coattails of someone further up the food chain. And when he ran out of coattails to hold on to, he crashed.

We can go back and forth about who's making the excuses all the day long. At the end of the day, it's Cuccinelli who's returning to the private sector. McAuliffe probably got a blank check from the DGA because he is a longstanding Democratic party bigwig and had lots of favors to call in. Cuccinelli is personally a good guy and I agree with his entire political platform. But he's no Terry McAuliffe - it was always going to be tough for Cuccinelli because of McAuliffe's experience, resources and political savvy. Sleazeball he might be, but a politically-skilled sleazeball.
