As soon as Dorisbell Pena received a text message informing her that President Nicolas Maduro seized control of a nationwide chain of appliance stores Friday, she rushed to the nearest outlet in the hopes of finding what's become one of the scarcest items of all these days in Venezuela: a bargain.
A 34-year-old teacher, Pena has watched as the price of a new stove she needs has doubled in recent weeks to 40,000 bolivars even as her 2,500 bolivar-a-month salary stays the same.
"I've got to take advantage of this opportunity today because tomorrow the prices keep going up," Pena said while huddled among friends on the concrete sidewalk outside the Tiendas Daka store in the eastern Caracas neighborhood of Bello Monte.
She's not alone. At 1:30 a.m., shoppers were still arriving to join the hundreds who began amassing in the afternoon after price inspectors said they found evidence of "usury" and Maduro ordered the chain's "occupation." In a televised address Friday night, the president vowed to reopen the stores Saturday and unload their stock of plasma televisions, washing machines and other seized merchandise at "fair prices."
"Leave nothing on the shelves, leave nothing in the warehouses," he said.

If the Federal government were to seize the Sahara Desert, within five years there would be a shortage of sand.
Legalized theft... So tell me Venezuela, what becomes of the future once you have ‘eaten all of your seed corn’ and run out of “Other Peoples Money”?
If you could remember history you would know... So when will your ‘Killing Fields’ or your ‘Cultural Revolution’ come to pass?

In Cuba during Castro’s waning rule, the hot item that the government was rice cookers. People stood in long lines to get one of these scarce items.
Just wait till we are standing in line for a doctor’s visit. Ain’t Communism wonderful?

You can bet that this generation of investors won’t make the same mistake in this country twice. I hope those people take really good care of the stuff that they pilfered, because regardless of any changes in the government there, they are going to be looking at those goodies for the next 40 years.
Basically, this is a snapshot of the end-stage of socialism.
Stoves, toothpaste, gas, meat, healthcare, whatever they want.
All totalitarians do the same thing and they all leave the alcohol mostly alone.
Drunks without weapons, are easier to control.

That greedy appliance store owner reminds me of the heartless American health-insurance companies who are sabotaging Obamacare by putting their lust for profits above morality and the common good.

Euthanasia, death panels, abortion on demand, shift the right to life from the individual to the state. The state will choose which children are viable, both in the womb and post-birth. The old and infirm will be denied food, water, or medicine and die in pain and suffering. Soon, our very existence will be deemed a privilege conferred by to you from the STATE. Technology is enabling the creation the VIRTUAL GULAGS: RINOS and others who refuse to see the truth will be walked to the camps with the rest of us.

I am sure glad this doesn’t go on in the US-— I mean the government seizing an industry? who would think of such a thing. Then the government running it poorly- then only people who can’t afford the product show up- and finally, the common man gets the shaft because prices go UP?? But you are still correct, In Venezuela’s case I believe they are nearing the point of no-return. In the U.S.’s case where heading in that direction quickly. But we still have more ‘seed-corn’ and ‘other peoples money’ to go through than they do.
