Nearly a month and a half into the dismal Obamacare rollout, Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services communications director Julie Bataille told reporters on Tuesday that CMS has begun emailing at least 275,000 people who had gotten stuck attempting to create accounts on the glitch-ridden HealthCare.gov, asking them to come back to the site and try again.
Bataille refused to say whether all 275,000 people would be able to use the exchange at the same time without crashing the system. Instead, she dodged specifics about the progress programmers have been making on the websites repair efforts and how CMS would be able to meet its Nov. 30 deadline the day the Obama administration has promised to have the site up and running smoothly for the vast majority of users.
The system is getting better each week, Bataille said. She didnt specify whether the website would be completely fixed and glitch-free, though. Instead, she pointed to other ways consumers could sign up for insurance through the exchanges whether that is via direct enrollment with insurance companies to meet the pent up consumer demand or calling the call centers or enrolling in person.
The Obama administrations repeated refusal to provide specifics on when the site would actually be functioning after the end-of-November deadline is not surprising given the wide-ranging technological and operational problems with the site.
Its even more discouraging since less than 50,000 people have signed up for health insurance through the federal exchange, according to unofficial estimates reported by the Wall Street Journal.
And it doesnt appear to be getting better.
According to tech experts, the sorry state of the current website does little to inspire confidence that it can be fixed and functional in less than three weeks.
When I visited HealthCare.gov on October 1, that was the worst piece of software Ive ever experienced in my life, said Luke Chung, founder and CEO of the software company FMS. It had nothing to do with too many users. It couldnt serve one user.
According to Sumit Nijhawan, CEO of Infogix, a data security firm working with private insurers, even if the White House can fix the problems associated with the site, they're going to find new ones immediately. Nijhawan also warned that the systems that allow CMS and health insurance companies to exchange information are nowhere close to being ready, meaning tech problems could last years.

Bump to take that graphic later
Gee, I just watched the Oversight hearing.....the democrats, Parks and Chou think everything is going well. Blaming the republican “kangaroo court” for misinformation, leaks and wasting Parks time on hearings when he could be fixing the glitches. I saw absolutely NO rats jumping ship, in fact, they were in complete harmony on their message....protect the White House and blame the republicans.
“The one good thing the Pubbies have done thus far is staying clear of the Obamacare mess.”
That’s the worry, that they will get “magnanimous” and offer to “help” the RATs out of the hole they are feverishly digging. All they really need to do is keep backfilling the hole. But I have hope when I watch Issa and Elijah “the wooden Cigar Store Indian” exchange blows. Cummings has the intellect of Cong. Hank Johnson of “Guam may Capsize” fame.
Are those guys Navigators?
Power...........
Psst ... COBOL (procedure division is where the action happends).
Gotta see this one at home...only a red x at the moment.
That dog won’t hunt...........
They should be locked into Obamacare for the rest of their lives........once they sign up on their own website, that is...........
Hallo! This is Peggy. Welcome to Healthcare.gov. What is your Social Security Number and Date of Birth, Bank account number and Mother's maiden name?.............
Shades of the La Brea Tar pits in Hancock Park - made famous (to some) from the cover of a book by Frederick Brooks entitled “The Mythical Man-Month” ... from way, way back.
the new website will smoothly tell you you can’t log into the website. a popup of barry comes on, sitting with brandy by a fire, and a cheap stolen mp3 of kenny g starts playing...
no way it will be ‘fixed’ by december.
the whole month of november wouldn’t have been long enough to test the whole system properly.
> We are paying twice for the same thing so how is the re-do
> being paid for? What is the source of the additional funds
> that are needed for the remediation work?
Well, with the mean and evyl Republicans shutting down the gubmint, and the mean and evyl Republican sequester, you should think that Barry and his flying monkeys would have difficulty being so profligate. But with DemonRATS, profligacy will be expressed, even if they have to steal it from real obligations.
It was just a date they threw out there to temporarily take the heat off the people who didn't do their job. Of course, they're already moving the goalpost, from "it'll be fixed" to "what we really meant was, we'll be making progress by then"...
I can’t even imagine the spaghetti code being written. Sounds like there was no design.
It’s always a lot harder to make software changes after it’s been rolled out.
It should be a seminar class for all software engineers in how not design a software system.
Laughing here—I haven’t thought of Kenny G in years.
