Brashear is not necessarily a “black” school (though it is probably a lot closer to that since the merger with Langley). A couple of nearby neighborhoods are overwhelmingly white, and Beechview is now full of Hispanics. Probably less black than most city schools.

Early history of Brashear...it was built to integrate the former students of the old Fifth Avenue HS (in uptown) w/the growing population in the Beechview area. I grew up in southern S. Oakland and I (had I NOT gone to Catholic HS) would have been bused (by an 1/2 alphabet formulary) to Brashear. The other 1/2 going to Scheneley.

Before my moms health failed, she was always dragging my dad to “look” at houses out in the “suburbs” (like Beechview, Crafton, Overbrook). Relatives of ours (that lived in a better part, at the time, of Oakland) moved to the exotic locale of Dormont.

WhenI got the alerts on my phone, I just KNEW “gang related.”
