(CNN) -- U.S. Rep. Trey Radel was sentenced to a year of probation after pleading guilty Wednesday to misdemeanor cocaine possession -- a charge that authorities say came after he bought a small amount of cocaine in a sting in the nation's capital last month.
Radel, a 37-year-old first-term Republican from Florida, said at his sentencing in D.C. Superior Court that he plans to enter an inpatient drug treatment program in Naples, Florida. It wasn't immediately clear how long he would be in treatment.
A tea party favorite, Radel was elected last year to represent southwest Florida's 19th Congressional District.
He is a former journalist and TV news anchor, having worked for WINK in Fort Myers, Florida. He also owned and eventually sold the Naples Journal newspaper, according to a biography on his congressional website.
Radel is married with a young son. He is active on Twitter, where he posts about touring the Capitol, listening to hip-hop, playing guitar and opposing Obamacare.

Get rid of the bum. No reason at all for him to have cocaine.
And the media bashing of the Tea Party begins in 3...2...1
The POSPOTUS is also a druggie and a felon. How come they don’t boot his az from the office?
Trey Radel should resign immediately.
Meanwhile Clinton possibly used cocaine in the White House without media scrutiny. His own brother said he had a nose like a vacuum cleaner. Obama admitted to past use/abuse and lied about being off of tobacco (and the press willingly covered up for him).
Odd that the press should suddenly show concern.
We don’t need cocaine addicts in public positions of leadership. We aren’t Democrats.
He wastes time listening and reviewing that garbage.
Dude is a scam. Dump him ASAP.
5.56mm
He’s Trey-gone.
The dopehead should resign.
Watch out for some (Libertarian leaning) TEA Party folk to begin the push for the usual whine, “we need to get rid of the phony ‘war on drugs.’”
Probably, yes.
But that is a completely separate issue.
Legal or illegal, we do not need a cocaine using representative.
He won the GOP primary last year with only 29% of the vote. Look for another primary next year.
Just an reminder that politics attract con artists who tell you what you want to hear and use the position for their own purposes.
He just went to the top of the GOP list for Veep on the 2016 ticket.. Maybe even the BIg Dog slot.
Marijuana doesn’t bother me much but I definitely don’t want hard drug users in positions of power.
I’ve known enough to know that they’re completely unreliable and erratic, often dangerously so.
this scumbag has a one-year old at home, and he’s out scoring blow in washington?
All great odumbo reporters are quick to point our if a person who alledgely commits a crime is a Tea Party or Republican and SELDOM do they EVER put the affiliation in the headlines for a demodummy.
