In 2008, he seemed like the coolest cat to hit the national scene in a long time, almost scientifically engineered to appeal to idealistic young Americans. How times have changed.
It’s like totally official, now, bro: Even the young Americans who were central to Barack Obama’s election in 2008 and 2012 are sick of the president, with a large and growing majority disapproving of the job he’s doing. In this, they’re just like their elders.
A new Quinnipiac Poll finds that only 36 percent of voters between the ages of 18 and 29 approve of the job the president is doing while fully 54 percent of the kids give him the thumbs down (10 percent didn’t know or care enough to respond to the topic). Back in March 2009, 62 percent of 18 to 29 years approved, compared to just 20 percent disapproving.
Millennials may be young, but they’re not stupid. As bad as Obama’s time in office has been for older Americans, nobody has taken it on the chin quite as bad as kids under 30, who are more likely to be unemployed, broke, and facing decades of sub-par wages if and when they do finally get a job.
Observers sympathetic to the president and a progressive Democratic agenda chalk the sharp decline up to the clusterfucked rollout of Obamacare. “Because they came of age watching a Republican president fail massively in Iraq, Hurricane Katrina, and the financial crisis, Millennials are predisposed to favor Democrats,” writes Peter Beinart, coming up with arguably the most inventive new variation on the old “blame Bush” meme. Beinart notes that even as Millennials are less trusting of government than Gen Xers and baby boomers had been in their 20s....

Trouble accessing the original article, but read enough to discover an interesting factoid: 18-30 age group (or whatever the “youngster” group was) voted for Cuccinelli over MacAuliffe rather significantly in the recent VA governor election...interesting, if true!
It took a Jimmuh Carter to give a Ronald Reagan.
“25 year-old white male. Graduated college with a degree in economics. Works as a welder, and not by choice, as he stated “there are no jobs for guys like me.” Not sure if he is an Obamabot, but I was impressed with his willingness to do manual labor to pay the bills. Maybe there is hope.”
The “white male” bit disqualifies him for most jobs due to the legal atmosphere created by affirmative action. I don’t know how long these young people can watch TV, selling all kinds of products they won’t be able to afford for the foreseeable future, before they vote their own financial self-preservation. I thought things were bad entering the 9-5 full-time workforce in the early 90s; this is just grim.

So true; the “soft bigotry of lowered expectations”. When the media and the government treat preferred minorities as our equals (with the same expectations), I will, too.

For the life of me I’ll never understand why anyone that is negatively impacted by affirmative action would ever vote for Dems; while white women flock to them because of the freebies (in terms of jobs & promotions), they fail to see the correlation of those policies with their inability to meet a spouse and breed. I work with such women who pride themselves on their “professional accomplishments” (which often fall short of their male counterparts anyway - they don’t really want to put in the time and hard work), and the venom they feel towards the darker people breeding the next generation (while they coddle pets) is palpable.
You were blessed at a young age...
They fell for Obama for the same reason they fell/fall for Apple products: doing so made them feel good about themselves.
A steady diet of Ramen noodles and processes mac and cheese (generic store brand, not Kraft) because they can’t afford anything better is flipping them from Liberals into “Libertarians”. Conservatives need to come up with a tolerable way to form a coalition with them in the short term and persuade them to come fully into the fold in the long term. And we need to to it now.
