In retrospect, it was more like "minder", unless you want to go for full-blown "saboteur".
Palin had a lot of advice from persons outside her core beliefs. This was a deliberate move by RINOs to use her persona but not give her any personal talking space. The GOP was corrupted then and still has many of the culprits doing dirty work.
