Senate Adopts New Rules on Filibusters

A bitterly divided Senate voted Thursday to ease the confirmation process for most presidential nominees, a momentous and potentially risky step that limits the ability of Republicans to block President Barack Obama's choices for executive-branch and most judicial posts.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D., Nev.) engineered the rules change, over Republican objections, with a complicated parliamentary maneuver that ended up placing new curbs on the use of the filibuster—a move so controversial that it is often called the "nuclear option."

"The American people believe Congress is broken. The American people believe the Senate is broken…It's time to change the Senate before this institution becomes obsolete," Mr. Reid said.

The key vote was 52-48, with all but three Democrats voting for the change and all Republicans opposed. Democratic Sens. Carl Levin of Michigan, Mark Pryor of Arkansas and Joe Manchin of West Virginia broke from their party and voted against changing the rules.

And when we have a GOP president and Senate, I don’t want to hear any whining from useless, moronic Dems when we pack the courts with conservatives.

What’s good for the commie lovers...

Its about time someone used the nuclear option in the Senate, the HOuse had filibusters also but they got rid of them a long time ago.

Watch....when the GOP gets the Senate they will give up this edge for some jive promises from the dems.

I just remember when the shoe was on the other foot and the Dems were holding up George W. Bush's nominees left and right and purely on ideological and political grounds, and when the GOP controlled Senate considered this same "nuclear" option, how they moaned, whined, complained and and cried out. Including to the person almost every one of these two-faced, coniving, lieing scoundrels who today are saying that this is somehow okay now that they are doing it.

The moment the Dems started doing that to the Bush nominees (and the moment the GOP started talking about the "nuclear option"), today's move became inevitable. The GOP has continued the trend of increasing use of the filibuster for nominees, and there is no doubt that the Dems would have done the same the next time the GOP controlled the Presidency and Senate. It was only a matter of time before some Senate majority - GOP or Dem - put a stop to it.

I always noted how ironic is was that the Dems used to be against ‘civil rights’ and filibustered against that . . . more politics being used for perceived gain in the day . . .

F’em. We win the Senate in 2014, and we will not change the rules back.

The next time there is a Republican president, the Democrats will put the old rules back

Or when the GOP regains Senate control, they will reverse the rule "reaching across the aisle" to the Dems who will be wailing about protecting the "rights" of the minority ...

Believe it or not, the rule passed today has a provision that says if Republicans win in 2014, the rules go back to 60. No joke.

Reid must know something. How else could he do this knowing that the Senate eventually will go back to the GOP?

I don't really buy this argument. Each Senate is not really restrained by what the previous Senate did. Regardless of whether Reid did this or not, a future GOP Senate could exercise the "nuclear option" (or choose not to do so), regardless of whether Reid did it. That may have been his thinking as well - he may have thought the GOP would have eventually done it, so why not pull the trigger now?

Because if the Dems hold the White House and the Judiciary, control of the Senate is irrelevant.

This is a response to the ObamaCare fallout, not anything the Republicans have done on nominees. They want to try to preserve the Senate, sure (by trying to goad the GOP into partisan counterattacks that will distract from the focus on ObamaCare), but they're prepping to lose it in 2014. They NEED those empty judicial seats filled ...
