The added complication in this case is that the restaurant's management originally corroborated her story. This means that they corroborated her story about the note and no tip -- even though they could have easily verified that someone at the restaurant had already processed the credit card transaction with the tip included.

This means that the only question now is whether the restaurant's management is careless, incompetent, or complicit in the waitress' apparent fraud. I suspect this is what any investigation is all about.

Based on the comments I've seen on the various web articles related to that story, it sounds like the restaurant isn't long for this world anyway. There have been about a half-dozen unsuccessful restaurants at that location in the last few years.
