As Christians we are commanded to discern and judge the teachings of others - otherwise the person who doesn’t will fall for any heresy. So ... “judgement” is necessary.
As far as the “judgement” as to whether one is saved or not — one can listen to the “why” of that person telling about being saved - but in the end “that ultimate judgement” does come down to God who knows whether that person is lying or telling the truth. Since we can’t see inside the heart and know whether that person has truly accepted Christ, we cannot a judge authoritatively on that particular subject.
But we can judge as to whether the “teachings” are correct according to scripture - and we are commanded to do that very thing.
Wow, you’re one of the more versed and scripturally discerning folks I’ve seen on FR. You’re right on the mark with both observations.
I believe that every denomination has some erroneous teachings that will one day be corrected by the Lord - not on this earth. I hear things that I know are not scriptural from many of the denominations - some will only go so far in their teachings and pick and choose what they believe. Either the entire Word is God’s Word or He is a liar. Some explain or try to explain things away they don’t agree with.
But, yes, we are to discern what others teach, and to look at Scripture in light of other Scriptures - thus, one isn’t taken out of context.
