A young entrepreneur was baffled when a Portland security guard thwarted her attempt to help her father pay for her braces by selling mistletoe - but told her she could beg, instead.
Madison Root, 11, arrived bright and early at Portland Saturday Market, setting up a sign and basket next to the Skidmore Fountain in the downtown area to sell her wares to the crowds.
... Madison Root knew her upcoming orthodontic work would be expensive, and wanted to contribute.
She spent Friday cutting mistletoe at her uncle's farm in Newberg, then wrapped it in clear cellophane and tied it with a red ribbon.
Her father, Ashton Root, supported his daughter's work ethic and drove her to the market on Saturday morning.

The PR for the town will be unpleasant for the local pols.
I had a Nephew who around 1965 decided to sell mistletoe where he lived in Ft. Walton, Bch. My parents lived in the country and had several trees with mistletoe growing in them.
He paid me to shoot them down with a .22 rifle. He did so well that he came back and got a lot more.
Well then beg and give out the mistletoe with each donation. That will nut up the powers to be..........
Of course the girl is right and the authorities are little Napoleans who would rather push around 11 year old girls than tackle real criminals who might fight back.
Having said that, did she try to apply for a permit?

Take out an ad on Craigslist and create a web page explaining what’s going on and what her intent is.

If she wanted to have a fundraiser she should have sold marijuana brownies. That is probably legal in Portland.
i tried that with a shotgun when i was 12, it didn’t work out so good.
When I was a kid, my brother and I would get mistletoe from the oak trees around the neighborhood and package sprigs with rubber bands from our paper route and sell them in front of the local strip malls at Christmas time.................

In the article she said she plans to be back and have a “kiss-off”. I hope that includes telling the rent-a-pig to kiss-off as well.

Portland, Oregon, down by the head with marxists, where the city’s unofficial motto is “Keep Portland Weird” would consider it in keeping with said motto.
