GOS, Nigeria Entombed at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean in an upended tugboat for three days, Harrison Odjegba Okene begged God for a miracle.
The Nigerian cook survived by breathing an ever-dwindling supply of oxygen in an air pocket.
The other 11 seaman aboard the Jascon 4 died...
It was a shock for the diver while he was down there looking for bodies, and we (in the control room) shot back when the hand grabbed him on the screen."
Okene kept faith with the psalm he recited, that promises to "give thanks in your name, Lord," at a service at his Redeemed Christian Church of God.

But apparently a fuller story and video now. "The full video of the rescue captured by divers was released by DCN Diving after a request from The Associated Press. Initially, a shorter version of the rescue emerged on the Internet. The authenticity of the video was confirmed through conversations with DCN employees in the Netherlands. "confirmed the events."
WOW I do not want to imagine what that was like... At... All.
Great story of faith.
...just a cook...
the chamber was likely there for the divers
wow
this guy has a story to tell now
exactly how deep was this?
If someone lives it's usually the cook.
The water at 100 feet would be compressed by the 100 feet of water above the sunken boat by a factor of 0.0361396 PSI per inch of water. Changing from feet to inches and multiplying by the factor gives 43.4 psi at the 100 foot depth. Water from outside the sunken ship would continue to flow into the boat compressing the air in the trapped pocket until the inside pressure balanced the pressure outside the hull. When the water stopped flowing into the hull the pressures inside, outside, and in the air pocket were all equalized at 43.4 PSI (just a shade over three atmospheres). Water is just about incompressible (about 1% per 1000psi) so the factor used is valid to at least 2300 feet.
This cook was an incredibly lucky fellow, he remembered his wife's text message of the Psalm...it was enough to save his life. Do you think he'll ever set foot on a boat again?

GtG
PS Many brave men lie asleep in the deep...
Many thanks! I knew someone would have a formula. Leave it to Freepers!
I thought it was 130 meters from the original video. Still heavy regardless. I worked a sunken vessel recovery site (standby for oil containment) where two people lived around 4-6 hours in an air pocket before dying, and they were maybe all of 20-30 feet deep in the SF Bay...
The ship sinking, he lucky to find an air pocket that lasted as long as it did. Complete darkness. Hearing the fish eating his friends.
The guy hearing the ship and the anchor dropping, the divers in the ship. They could have easily missed him. Scaring the bejesus out of the diver! Nightmares he must be having.
BTW my posting the article at Lucianne got me banned....
One sentence posting for a comment and not splitting the headline! It was my very first posting of an article. Now last.
God bless him and his faith.
