Chancellor Angela Merkel has come under fire for missing Nelson Mandelas memorial in Johannesburg on Tuesday. Although dozens of world leaders made the trip, she stayed in Berlin.
Germany was represented by President Joachim Gauck, who took his place alongside world figures including US President Barack Obama and United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.
Although Merkel wrote in a book of condolence in the South African Embassy in Berlin on Monday, she did not travel to pay personal tribute, a decision which was criticized by some.

Bush should have stayed home too.
So everyone in the world must grovel and prostrate themselves at the bier of a communist terror leader? Amazing!
Well, he went and got booed. Shows the real face of South Africa these days.
Leaders do not follow the herd.
What difference does it make at this particular time, anyhow?
The job of a President in a Parliamentary Republic is to go to these state funerals. If he or she was denied that role there would be nothing to do.
Merkel wasn’t there but I seriously doubt that she ‘missed’ the event.
I dont remember Obama, Clinton, or Bush attending the funeral for Margaret Thatcher, a REAL patriot..oh yeah I forgot, Conservative woman, doesn’t get the same kind of gushing over by the media when they die
She had a prior commitment at the Glockenspiel Mfr.’s Annual Convention in Munich.
Uh Oh, that’s gonna cost the Dummycrats some votes in South Florida.
She already lived much of her life under communism.
She doesn’t need to go all the way to new Zimbabwe to see a dead one.
"I wouldn't say I've been *missing* it, Bob."
Bush went hoping Angela would be there. Angela did not go becuase Bush WAS there.
Too bad. She coulda gotten another awesome neck massage.
“Well, he went and got booed.”
And didn’t the new SA Pres. get booed too?
I guess it wasn’t a racial thing.
I think that’s despicable behavior at that type of event.
I wonder if the same people who are carping about Merkel would have liked her to go so she could get booed too.
Good for Angela! lol
Lots of great beer in the Marienplatz, too.
