I’m not excusing Mandela for what he did. I’m just talking about his passing. There’s nothing to be gained for conservatives/Republicans to denounce Mandela, although they shouldn’t wax eloquently about him either.

Rather than getting into the whole Mandela hysteria, how about just issuing a short statement such as “I express my condolences to the family of Nelson Mandela, former president of South Africa. I understand the great admiration his people felt for him and I wish the nation of South Africa the best.” Or something like that. Then get back to the Budget or something like that.

“There’s nothing to be gained for conservatives/Republicans to denounce Mandela...”

Only the truth.

I personally don’t care one way or the other about Nelson Mandella. He is gone from this earth now and the ultimate judgment for him has already happened. For the Bible says - it is appointed unto man once to die and after that the judgment Maybe he made peace with God - maybe he didn’t. I have no way of knowing that.
