This is one of the most confusing stories I’ve read.

They did repeated cavity searches because the woman underpaid and mistreated her housekeeper?

What in the world do homosexual partners of Americans have to do with anything? Why would they arrest them for something that is legal over there?

Do they know the US won’t protect its embassy? They can fire bomb it and hit it with mortars. Just give Obama a YouTube video to blame.

Can anyone explain why the Indian diplomat was treated this way?

It's LEO's recklessness. Of course she's covered by diplomatic immunity. I bet U.S. authorities will back off and apologize soon, whoever involved will be disciplined, that's it, and hoping Indians will forget it. But U.S. consular office in New Delhi now open to Queda attack!

It is typical treatment of someone going to jail so they don’t smuggle anything into the jail.

Homosexuality is Criminal Again as India’s Top Court Reinstates Ban

http://world.time.com/2013/12/11/homosexuality-is-criminal-again-as-indias-top-court-reinstates-ban/

In a huge blow to gay rights in the world’s largest democracy, India’s top court on Tuesday reinstated an archaic law that makes gay sex a criminal offense on grounds that it can only be dismissed by lawmakers in government.

In a surprise move, India’s top court on Wednesday reversed a landmark judgment by a lower court decriminalizing homosexuality in the country. The court said that the law regarding homosexuality could only be changed by the government. “The legislature must consider deleting this provision (Section 377) from law as per the recommendations of the attorney general,” Justice GS Singhvi, the head of the two-judge Supreme Court bench said in Wednesday’s ruling.

Stunned LGBT activists, who have campaigned for decades for acceptance in India’s deeply conservative society, called the decision “retrograde, regressive and revolting.”

In light of this, my bet is someone at the State Dept or higher is pandering to their base (Gay mafia/activists) and indulging in some “payback.” Any mischief regarding trying to improperly import or pay domestic help less than minimum wage is just a cover story.

Thank you, Patriot!

In fact there are really few legal grounds to detain a diplomat(being captured red-handed on a murder scene and some very similar situations), and none to arrest one without certain authorisation by a nation or recognized international body which is represented by said person.
Underpaying nunny is actually a ridiculous charge to arrest any person, let alone a diplomat from a friendly nation.
NYC might be an absolute police state, I don’t think a case of underpaying a nunny may pass beyond a civil dispute even in Red China.

It had to do with her trying to gain entry for her low paid servant. Pretty standard for foreign dignitaries.

Possibly. I don’t know enough now.

But this comes upon learning last week that HUNDREDS of Russian diplomats applied for and used Medicaid for decades in the USA! We lost over a million dollars even though Russia gave them healthcare for free. Everyone who comes here has their hand out.

Also there is usually a problem with domestic help with diplomats. In their countries, domestic help borders on slave labor … or for slave wages.

US diplomats in other civilized countries aren’t treated this way for sure, no matter what are their crimes. There are certain procedures to held diplomats accountable. Arresting foreign diplomats is a thing you can expect in Zimbabwe or Somalia. I don’t think that even a North Korean LEOs are as ignorant and lawless as of People’s Republic of NYC.

Actually, I think the “civilized” treatment you reference has been discarded in recent years.

Yes, I support her arrest. And we do not know yet if she was strip searched few the documents she was carrying.

Well, if “We, the people” think this way, what are you expecting from your government?

Nobody who’s anybody arrests a diplomat or even consulate diplomat without the okay from the highest levels of the State Department.

The responsible official is Preetinder Singh "Preet" Bharara, a naturalized citizen born in India, whom Zero appointed Sheriff of Wall Street (US Attorney for the Southern District of New York) in 2009. Either he has ventured off the reservation or the Obama / Kerry State Department is even more incompetent than we thought.
