Considering de Blasio’s marxist underpinnings, I seriously doubt this has anything to do with animal welfare... this is all about abolishing the bougeous appearance of affluent people enjoying the finer things in life.
bougeous = bourgeois
Eh, I doubt that. Affluent people aren’t taking horse-drawn carriage rides on NYC.
I think the animal welfare issue is a legitimate concern - I used to walk by the carriage stables on a semi-regular basis, and those horses are some of the worst-kept I’ve ever seen. Not that they should be banned, but there should at least be more attention paid to the horses’ conditions.
Striking a blow at affluence (or the appearance of) is probably a secondary consideration/added benefit.
Bill won the Dem primary partly on appealing to PETA and other animal rights fanatics, who WILL vote single issue, by promising to get rid of the carriages.
Keep in mind that the real danger (or, to non NYC Conservatives, the benefit) of Deblasio is that he’s in no way beholden to the wealthy Manhattan Liberal power elite which would otherwise act as a political check on his extremism.
