What would a U.S.-China war look like?
The Week ^ | Eugene K. Chow

Posted on 01/01/2014 5:28:41 PM PST by Farnsworth

Imagine this: In the early morning, a barrage of more than 1,000 Chinese ballistic and cruise missiles bombard Taiwanese civilian and military targets.

As the U.S. Air Force stationed in Okinawa prepares to rush to the aid of its sworn ally, Chinese cyber attacks wreak havoc on America's air defense and targeting systems. A second volley of ballistic missiles detonates in space, destroying critical military satellites, while a third rains down on the base, damaging jets and leaving runways unusable.

Meanwhile, a U.S. carrier strike group led by the USS George Washington has launched from Japan and is steaming towards the Taiwan Strait. Without the advanced warning and additional data supplied by satellites, the group's missile defense systems are at a disadvantage against the Chinese "carrier killer" missiles that are streaking towards them. Defense systems do their best, but a few missiles still hit their mark, leaving the USS George Washington's flight deck unusable. America's awesome air and sea power has been sidelined.

Why even bother to launch missiles when a half-dozen envelopes of powder, placed in the right places, would bring our economy to a standstill?

America’s economy collapses, pulling China’s into the sinkhole after it. I’ll look for you when the war is over, an hour and a half from now. (Apologies to Tom Lehrer.)

What would be the point of destroying Taiwan? What do you do with the country at that point?

The Chinese have to capture Taiwan in one piece. Killing thousands then having to clean up the mess wouldn’t garner much world support.

There is another option. China attacks Taiwan, the US destroys all oil and gas depots that feed China.

In reality, many of the weapons systems under development will never see actual combat...

In reality, many of the weapons systems currently deployed by America are battle tested and possess the firepower to turn most of China into a memory in a very short amount of time. That's the difference. We know what stuff doesn't work in actual combat. They don't.

The United States military remains the world's most fearsome fighting force, unbeatable on a one-on-one basis.

While no one will dispute this premise, it should be noted that in recent past events, even with overwhelming force at our disposal, we have been less than successful.

Our leaders posture, send our best to die or be mutilated without victory and the enemy's surrender as the objective. Of what value is a first rate military when used for second rate results???

The US remains the best, but the possible opposition is getting better. Fighting China tomorrow will be bloodier for our side than it was yesterday. The painfulness of such a conflict is growing.

I’ve spent about 15 years observing todays “urban” youth up close.......we are in considerable trouble.

The bad, liberal, stupid and plain dumb way out number the rest of us. See the election and re-election of Obozo as an example.

You have faith, I lost mine.

Most people are clueless about the matter. China has at least hundreds of missiles with small nuclear warheads that can hit any part of the USA.

The Chinese would pop a couple of missiles with EMPs over the West Coast. Game over. They would come back in six months and, prolly without firing a shot, clean up what's left. Read about it.

One Ohio class submarine could land 192 warheads on China. Submarines are immune from EMP. China would cease to function as a coherent society. We have more than one Ohio class submarine. Provided we have a Commander in Chief that is willing to use this weapon, we will not have to use any weapons as we will not be attacked.
