That’s probably because he’s proud of the fact that he doesn’t get him clipped. So that’s what a little poodle would looking in its “natural” state, though that’s a questionable word, since most of these dogs are so highly bred as to bear little resemblance to a generic canine.
What I thought was funny is that the Hatfield character in his books has a poodle named Eddie.
