U.S. border agents should have the authority to search laptop computers carried by news photographers and other travelers at international border crossings without reasonable suspicion, a federal judge in Brooklyn ruled this week.

In a written decision on Tuesday, U.S. District Judge Edward Korman granted a government motion to dismiss a lawsuit filed by civil rights attorneys who claimed the practice was unconstitutional and sought to have it halted.

Lets everyone bring a nonfunctioning, defunct laptop so the TSA can inspect each and every one. Lets waste their time to the max. Also, insist on a patdown: refuse the terahertz scan.

They can search it. I don’t have to give them the password. Let a dim-witted customs agent try to hack my password.

“Korman... cited previous rulings finding that the Fourth Amendment constitutional right against unreasonable searches doesn’t apply to the government’s efforts to secure international borders from outside threats.”

Appeal the case. The appeal only has to say:

“Only, they aren’t. California just issued a license to practice law to an illegal alien and as of Oh-now-thirty, the Feds haven’t arrested him”

“Korman found that the plaintiffs hadn’t shown they suffered injury that gave them standing to bring the suit.

Given the fact that it is without a doubt possible for the government or other malcontents to load stuff surreptitiously onto ones electronic devices and

Given the fact that fear of this occurring to one who may have an opinion different than that of the powers that be, or be in a position of wealth or power enhancing their value as a target, has a "chilling effect" on travel and/or route The plaintiff obviously has suffered injury and has standing.

If you look at the map concerning the State of Louisiana, if you live in Baton Rouge, you’re screwed, If you live in Shreveport, you’re not. Now, the question .... the only major town in the middle of the State lies ‘somewhere’ either in or out of the border. The State’s major military camp, Fort Polk, might be within, or without of this new Nazi-drawn border.

And who do we have to thank for this gift?

Absolutely. This is so easy.

1. PGP disk encryption. Makes it hard as hell for even one of their forensic’s guys to penetrate.
2. The Cloud. Keep data on your machine to a bare minimum and access your stuff from the cloud.
3. Have more than one profile on the machine. If you are demanded to surrender your machine and have sensitive data you don’t wish them to see, log onto the dummy account that contains a booby trap. Create a script that will wipe your data, set the properties of the script to run minimized so that they don’t see it running and try to stop it. Put a shortcut in the Startup folder so it executes automatically on login and make it so the script self-destruct before terminating.

All gone!

My earlier reading of the decision was that the plaintiffs lacked standing and therefor the judge was granting summary judgment with the Government.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

For what it’s worth, searches of this kind are focused primarily on people bringing child porn into the country on their laptops.

The pattern is emerging that nowadays, every overreach by the federal government is being approved by a federal judge somewhere.

Every single one.

Obamacare individual mandate - approved.

Challenge to presidential overrides of laws - dismissed.

Unconstitutional search of journalists at the border - approved.

Others?
