On average, the high temperatures are getting higher, and the lows are getting higher too. Global warming is as real and serious as ever, it's just exceedingly gradual compared with the dramatic temperature swings that are still part of living in midlatitudes in winter.

Anyway, you can see in your comparison that there are several coastal areas lagging in ice formation in 2012 vis a vis 2008.
And furthermore your advice certainly applies to the excitement over the "record cold" we're having. I use quotes because I remember at least two occasions in the 80's thru 90's when we sank into the -20's here in Chitown. I don't think we hit zero for some years previous to this year, when we got to -14, so that's still warmer than those previous cold snaps, nicht wahr?
And furthermore than that, I heard someone say on TV, regarding the Olympics, that Moscow was having a warm winter this year. Well, they've had some cold one's too, but it's not like the polar cold is enveloping the northern hemisphere, know what I mean?

I imagine coastal areas can vary greatly in spite of the overall average temps at the pole due to varying ocean currents. The two maps of ‘08 and ‘13 show way more snow and more ice overall in ‘13. Especially in Russia which is supposedly “unusually” warm this year. Also around and on Baffin Island.

I would agree more snow over the land areas. And Hudson Bay is frozen more solidly, and pretty early as I noticed from following the MODIS coverage. I wondered if they were going to complain that the ice was too thick for the polar bears!
It looks like European Russia has a little less snow in 2013, although extending across Siberia, the snow cover definitely looks more solid.
Well, the real deal is the summer minimum in the North Polar Sea, so we’ll see!
