Chris Christie: ‘People will be held responsible’ (Update)
Politico ^ | January 8, 2014 | ELIZABETH TITUS and MAGGIE HABERMAN

Posted on 01/08/2014 3:00:59 PM PST by Timber Rattler

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said Wednesday he is “outraged” by newly released documents linking a senior member of his staff to the closure of lanes on a major bridge in September — shutdowns that caused massive traffic jams and sparked allegations that the closures were the result of political retribution.

The Republican, a likely 2016 presidential candidate, denied personal knowledge of any plans to close the lanes and vowed that “people will be held responsible for their actions.”

(snip)

“I am outraged and deeply saddened to learn that not only was I misled by a member of my staff, but this completely inappropriate and unsanctioned conduct was made without my knowledge. One thing is clear: this type of behavior is unacceptable and I will not tolerate it because the people of New Jersey deserve better. This behavior is not representative of me or my Administration in any way, and people will be held responsible for their actions.”

Christie previously had denied his staff played a role in the lane closures and even mocked reporters for asking about the issue when it emerged months ago. He said a traffic study prompted the closure. But the emails tell a different story, potentially undercutting Christie’s reputation as a truth-teller who doesn’t play political games.

Talk about throwing your staff under the bus. This guy is worse than Obama. Does he actually expect people to believe that his staff acted without his knowledge, knowing how much of a micromanaging control freak he is?

Ya, I don’t believe he did not know. However, I don’t think he threw them under the bus. I suspect he covered for them but told them if the truth comes out then the gig is up.

Feigned indignation.

If he didn’t know about the plan, it shows his lack of control over people in high places in his administration.

If he did know about the plan, the the culpability is with him.

It's going to be tough for Christie to make it through this:

GWB lane closures delayed EMS response to 4 calls in Fort Lee

It also took EMS seven minutes to reach an unconscious 91-year-old woman who later died of cardiac arrest at a hospital. Although he did not say her death was directly caused by the delays, Favia noted that “paramedics were delayed due to heavy traffic on Fort Lee Road and had to meet the ambulance en-route to the hospital instead of on the scene.”

As a factual matter, Christie can certainly argue that the 91-year old may have died even with a faster response time, etc. But politically, he's f*cked (pardon my language).

David Wildstein is the one who actually shut down the traffic lanes. He worked for the New York & New Jersey Port Authority and happens to be Mr. Christie’s close friend from high school. He was also appointed to the Port Authority by Christie. So it is very hard to believe that Christie knew nothing about this.

ROTFLOL. Only the ones against him. He is a joke. Am getting really tired of these little minds in politics playing their petty little games.

Excellent news all around.

If he was involved, he's done politically outside of Jersey.

If not, it illustrates that he has poor judgment in hiring those surrounding him and those he hired think they are above the law and he's still done politically outside of Jersey.

From the NY Times article:

Mr. Christie’s handpicked chairman of the Port Authority, David Samson, was also involved in the closings, according to the emails, which describe his efforts to “retaliate” against New York officials who had not been told of the changes and sought to ease the gridlock.

Your two points are very similar to mine in post #6.

This does point out why it is better to consider presidential candidates from the ranks of governors, rather than senators and representatives.

Governors must act during their terms in office. Thus, we get a chance to see how they have responded and expect how they would act in presidential affairs. We also get indicators of the types of people they would appoint to various federal positions.

Senators and representatives get to hide behind faux votes and speechifying.
