Your intentions with your actions are noble as are the intentions of those who stuff all the literature back into the postage paid envelopes and mail it back to the source. The thing is, the people on the other end don’t really care about your point of view.

During one of the Bush campaigns I visited a local Republican HQ to get some Bush bumper stickers. People were present at a phone bank making calls. I overheard them joking about the comments made to them by people who refused to donate.

The same is true with the envelopes, they are opened and the check is extracted. No one reads the phony surveys that ultimately end up with the box you check. No one cares about any comments you scrawl on the literature you put back in the envelope. The envelope openers sole purpose is to process the check.

Ultimately, the vast majority of money the campaigns spend is from the “rich people”—Chamber of Commerce, etc. You’re asked to participate so you can feel like you’re somebody.

What to do? If you don’t have caller i.d. and can thus know to ignore the call, when you answer and determine its a phone solicitation hang up. Don’t comment, don’t provide any demographic information, nothing. If you don’t have a shredder, use the literature you receive to light your fireplace or burn barrel in the back yard.

The hell with them and their games.
