My mother has been director of psych hospital for 2 decades and still is. She says the same thing and deals with all the folks the police and other hospitals dump on them daily. That’s all she does.

But she hasn’t had to kill any patient.

There are effective means to handle combative patients. ER personnel are supposed to be trained to handle them. If they are not they don't belong in an ER. But this didn't happen in an ER, it appears to have been in the family home.
