As though we never have ice in the pacific northwest. We had freezing rain last night — sheet of ice. This occurs quite often when warm, moist air moves in from off the Pacific over frozen land.
My primary objection is that the news stories - and northern Freepers - always mock Atlanta for being shut down due to 1-3" of 'snow.'
Perhaps that might happen, but that's not what happened this time, nor the last time, nor the time before.
Atlanta's shut down because of ice that didn't occur because of a freezing rain overnight.
Atlanta's shut down because of ice that covered almost an entire metro area's roadways over the course of an hour or two during the middle of a workday.
It's Atlanta, not Macon or Valdosta. Some meaningful percentage of the drivers who couldn't negotiate the roads were from the upper midwest and northeast.
Not so cold here and very glad about that.
Tonight
Mostly Cloudy 56 °F
Tomorrow
Mostly Cloudy 81 °F
Sounds heavenly about now, though we did make it to 32 above today. :)
The daffodils in April and tulips and lilacs in May will certainly be welcome this spring. I’m getting just old enough to weigh the trade-offs of this four season climate. I’ve lived in the upper Midwest my whole life so I’m used to winter, just not THIS cold for so prolonged a time.
If you’re so inclined, have a margarita by the pool for me tomorrow while I’m shoveling 6 more inches of the white stuff. I’ll drink a toast to you with hot chocolate and peppermint schnapps. Cheers to you FRiend!
So how did your family make out - okay I hope?
You know, I think I will do that. Been a while since I had a margarita. And it will be outdoors.
I do know what you are going through. I spent a bunch of years in the upper mid west. Believe me, there is nothing better about four seasons than one season called summer all year long. It might get a we bit toasty in June and July but nothing the swimming pool won’t cure.
Best wishes to you there. It has been a prolonged very deep freeze. At least you are not stuck on a road in Atlanta.
